Hello,

According to the manual on page 104 your load originals face up in the tray.

Here is a link to the manual that you can use for reference.

load an original in the automatic document feeder

    1. Load your originals face up in the document feeder tray with the top of the page

    on the left.

The automatic document feeder holds a maximum of 50 sheets of plain paper.

To load an original on the glass

    1. Remove all originals from the document feeder tray, then lift the lid on the HP Allin-

    One.

    2. Place your original face down on the right front corner of the glass.

If you are loading a proof sheet, make sure the top of the proof sheet is lined up

against the right edge of the glass.

Whitch way does the paper go in for faxing ?

If your using the feeder on the top of the scanner, it should go face up. If you are faxing from the glass - face down.

Do I load the original for faxing right side up or upside down? HP officejet v40

Look at the input tray it shows a symbol of an original.

If the lines on the symbol face you , then put the paper in face UP.
If the lines are on the folded corner of the symbol, then place the paper in face DOWN.

If you are still not sure, place the paper in face UP and press "COPY"
If it copies the page, then that is the correct orientation.

If thre copy is blank, repeat the copy test with the document face DOWN.

When faxing does paper face uup or down

You load the originals print side uo on the document feeder tray or print side down on the glass.
To send a single page fax you can either load the original on document feeder tray or on the glass; to send a multi-page fax you must use the document feeder tray.

The position of the paper is the same either you copy, fax or scan.
All this is clearly explained in the user's manual, that you should read and you can download from HP support pages for you printer:

Which way does the paper go into the feed when faxing?

Load the originals, with the print side up, into the document feeder tray. If you are sending a single-page fax, such as a photograph, you can also load the original on the glass. If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe
