Question about Sonic Computers & Internet

1 Answer

When I reboot my PC or open Sonic, I get a Sonic Update Manager window that says "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the 'Sonic Update Manager' disk and click OK". When I click cancel I get another window that says "An installation package for the product Sonic Update Manager can not be found. Try the installation again using a vaild copy of the installation package 'UM.MSI'. This occured after using "RegCure" and "ParetoLogic" - products that were only supposed to clean up my PC registry and temp files.

Your solution is to run yet another registry cleaner - this will not work. After running RegCure - a similar cleaner, a file that I need was deleted.

  • Mary Lynch Aug 09, 2008

Thanks for trying then - your solution does not fix my problem. The problem occurred after using a cleaner (RegCure & ParetoLogic) that removed a file that the Sonic Update Manager needs. Running another cleaner will not restore the missing file.

Download and install CCleaner.
You can use ccleaner to clean up all windows and internet temporary files, ren a registry clean and also in "tools > startup" stop that annoying Sinic nag screen from coming up.

Registry cleaning is just one of the tools available to you with ccleaner.

I am sure you are probably aware of MSCONFIG and how you can go to start up and remove or disable app's (programs) from starting with Windows and then you get the MSCONFIG nag screen the next time you boot your machine.

Using the delete and disable feature in Tools > Startup of ccleaner avoids this nag screen and is a lot easier to use.

I have only ever seen Sonic on store bought machines like HP, Gateway or Emachines, quite honestly these machines come bundled with a pile of rubbish programs that you don't need and have everything installed set to auto update slowing your machine down and sometimes producing the nag screen you are seeing now.

I do this for a living and if you have one of these types of machine and want to get it running smoother and less stressed let me know and I will gladly help you.

Hi, The DVD/CD Rom Icon has dissapeared on My Computer. When I go to control panel - device manager and click on the dvd/cd rom drive icon I get the following message in the genaral...

You will need to re-install the driver. Right click the device in device manager and select properties. Navigate to the driver section and uninstall all existing drivers. (It may *not* give you the option to do that, depending on how corrupted the driver is, but it should.)
Reboot the PC.
Upon reboot, Windows should find the new device and install generic drivers. It will probably ask you to reboot a second time.

Sonic cannot find writable equipment on my PC

When you open "My Computer", does the icon shows 'CD-ROM' or 'CD-writer' ?

When you open "Device Manager", and expand the 'DVD/CD' branch of the tree, is your CD-writer listed?

Tsstcorp cd dvdw ts-l633a scsi cdrom device can't read the driver or it is corrupt. I am getting error code 39

Using Device Manager, look to see it laptop is sensing the presence of the cd-rom. (if it is not on the list, try removing / rebooting / and then reinstalling cd-rom) If it shows on the list, click to open it's properties and then delete the drivers for cd-rom (this will cause the laptop to reload the drivers on the next reboot) if it still doesn't work, go to micosoft updates and try to update the drivers there. If it still malfunctions, then the cd-rom may be faulty. Try replacing it with another cd-rom and see what you get.

Dvd rom problem

Try to turn off the vista's burning feature.

It's not yours or anyones burners....just an update in vista which buggered the policies up

Go to your run command and type (start.....Run.....)
type gpedit.msc
Go to User configuration/Administrative templates/Windows components/Windows explorer
On the right pane, double click on "Remove CD burning features" tick the enabled button, then OK.
Reboot or logoff/logon to apply.

If your vista version does not have the gpedit function, do the following.
Open regedit, go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

In the right pane, if it does not already exist, create a new 32-bit DWORD value. Name the new value as NoCDBurning, and assign the value data to 1.
Reboot or logoff/logon to apply.

This should fix the problem

Sonic record now program will not find cd drive

  1. Update your drive's firmware/drivers. Most companies regularly update their firmware and drivers. If you are unsure what model your burner is and its firmware, click here to find out.

  2. Enable DMA. Direct Memory Access enables better efficiency of data. For more info, check how to enable DMA.
  3. Your media. Check the following:
    • The disc is clean and unused.
    • The media is recommended by your burner's manufacturer or try a different brand, preferably a name brand, if you continue to have problems.
    • Make sure that media (-R/+R, -/+RW, dual-layer compatibility) is supported by the burner by checking burner's manual or manufacturer's website. This is especially true for some Blu-Ray burners which do not support CD-R/RW media.

  4. Lower the write speed of your burner.
  5. If your burner is external, make sure it is connected directly to the computer via USB/Firewire and not a hub or other other device like a sound card.
  6. Update to the latest PX Engine. The PX Engine improves compatibility with newer burners on the market.
  7. A reinstall of the burner's drivers may also help.
    • Windows XP: Go to My Computer and choose Properties.
    • Windows Vista: Go to Start --> Control Panel --> System and Maintenance --> Device Manager.
    • Click on the Hardware tab.
    • Select Device Manager
    • Expand DVD/CD-ROM Drives, then select your burner and uninstall it by right -licking on it.
    • Reboot.
