Philips Magnavox MWR20V6 DVD Recorder/VCR Logo

I recently purchased a pack of staples brand DVD RW's instead of the name brand ones I usually use. When I insert them into the player I get an error message stating that it cannot record on this disc ( E 4 54040990). Why is this and what can I do to fix it?

Please check if your blank DVD's are dual layer ( DL ) 8.5 GB disc. If so your player does not support dual layer writing. It will record only on 4.7GB single layer blank discs.

My discs are 4.7GB single layer.

What other blank dvd's will record on sylvania srec427 , besides maxell 2x , 4x ( these are the ONLY ONES that would record on this tv/dvd/vhs/cd combo . what other brands will work ? i've tried ab

Your combo device will accept all bands of recordable DVD but only the minus R or minus RW not the plus R nor the plus RW I've had great success using Staples brand of DVD-R/RW and is usually very competitively priced if its in stock but I've found that Maxcell & JVC brand are often on sale at some of the major big box MEGA stores nationwide that is also an awesome and reliable disc that I use and can recommend

I have a JVC DVD Player (XV-N670B), (XV-N672S). I recently purchased a BluRay DVD and after inserting the DVD into the player, "Disc Error" appears. Would you tell me if my player can...

Sorry to say, no; this is a model limitation not a fault as such. XV-N670B is a DVD player, and the playable formats are:

DVD-Video, DVD-RW/-R, +RW/+R, CD, CD-R/RW, SVCD/VCD, WMA/MP3/JPEG, DivX. No Blu-ray support.

The JVC XV-BP11 and XV-BP1 do play Blu-Ray discs, as they are specifically Blu-Ray players (according to the JVC website).

I have heard of quite a few Blu-Ray players allowing DVD playback. The XV-BP1 supports the following playable media: BD-R/RE (Blu-Ray), DVD-Video/-R/-RW, R/ RW, CD, USB (again, this is from the same JVC website). You would need to purchase this or a similar Blu-Ray player to enjoy the benefits it has to offer (but it's up to you if you want one of those later on).

DVDs are still good, the 'disc error' message on your DVD player is normal due to the wrong media format inserted. The bonus here is it didn't cost you anything to ask, and you don't need a workshop quote on repairs.

This is the best free advice I can offer.

I recently have not been able to record on DVD+RW discs. An error message keeps coming up saying it cannot record on this disc. The dumb part about it is I still have a couple of discs of the same nature...

According to the user's manual, for DVD+RW or DVD-RW discs, it may take some time for the disc to be recognized and then it has to format the disc prior to using it. This should be an automatic process when the disc is inserted (looking at page 17 of the owner's manual). If this is not happening, you may need to clean the DVD with a DVD cleaner (a DVD disc with tiny brushes that wipe the lense on the unit while the disc spins). You could first try using a can of compressed air and blowing any dust/dirt out of the DVD slot (with the tray open).

Record a tv show while watching another show

You need to get either:
  1. DVD-RW [Rewritable]
  2. DVD+RW [Rewriteable]
Brands are Maxwell, Verbatim, Sony JVC, Staples etc

Hope this helps

Disc error message when load DVD

Are you loading to play or to record?
Commercial DVDs should play.
DVDs for recording may not be recognized by your drive. First make sure that the disc is blank. You must insert a blank disc of the proper format: DVD-R or RW, DVD+R or RW. Even with the proper format, some brands may not behave the same way as other brands.

Can anybody help me, I purchased a Samsung dvd recorder model dvdvr350m, since purchasing the unit it will not recognize that it has recordable dvd's in it (dvd-rw),it tells me no disc inserted please...

Did the sales guy use the same DVD-RW that you did? Maybe the brand you are using is not of good quality and can not be recognized by the recorder. If he did not use the same disc did you notice if he used DVD-RW or DVD+RW? Some DVD-Recorders only recognize one or the other but this is kind of rare these days. I recommend verbatim brand discs. They should be available for sale at any shop. If you want the ultimate in quality DVDs then go with Taiyo Yuden. This Japanese brand invented recordable media and in addition to that they are obsessed with quality. www.supermediastore.com is always where I get my discs.

Some DVD recorders don't like certain types of media. Does this happen with all blank dvd+rw disks or just with that specific brand? If it's that brand then you should just use a different one.
