Replace power button gateway sx 2311

Computer unplugged from power, FOLLOW Anti-Static Precautions.

1) Remove the Side Panel.
Viewing the computer from the Front; the Right Side Panel removes. Remove screw, pull Side Panel to the rear of the computer.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883113140

Click on the large main photo.
There are 9 smaller views shown. 3 across, and 3 rows.
Bottom row, click on the photo in the Middle.
Shows Rear view of computer.

Along the back edge of the Side Panel, is a finger pull handle formed out of the Side Panel. There also looks to be two screws. One above the pull handle, one down towards the bottom.

2) Remove the Front Bezel.
Click on the Middle row/middle photo.
Also look at Middle row, 3rd photo. (Photo all the way to right)

There are 3 Black tab locks, formed out of the plastic of the Front Bezel. One towards the Top, one in the Middle, and one towards the Bottom.

If memory serves these tabs are gently pulled to the outside, to release the Front Bezel. Ease the Top tab out a little, and Middle tab.

Start easing the Front Bezel away from the metal framework, of the computer case, a little. Then release the Bottom tab.
Front Bezel should swing, and then come off.

Not your Gateway model of computer case, but this Gateway model shows the plastic Tabs to release,

http://support.gateway.com/s/CASES/3501975/3501975faq6.shtml

The Power On Button is an assembly. The plastic housing of the Power On Button assembly, has a Power On switch inside.
I gently heat the plastic with a hair dryer, moving the hair dryer back, and forth at it.

Once the tabs of the plastic, of the Power On Button assembly, is softened; then I remove the Power On switch.

I have found this ATX power on switch, fits a LOT of desktop computers,

Gateway wireless keyboard detection

Insert the installation CD that came with your wireless keyboard set into your computer's CD-ROM drive.

Use the CD to install the drivers for the wireless peripherals.

Insert batteries into the keyboard .

Use a screwdriver to remove any screws that hold the battery bay covers closed.

Connect the wireless signal receiver to your computer.

Receivers for wireless keyboard and mouse sets usually use a USB connector.

Your computer will automatically detect the receiver.

Turn on your keyboard if the devices have power buttons.

Press the "Sync," "Connect" or "Pair" buttons on the keyboard , depending on your model.

If present, press the "Connect" button on the wireless signal receiver as well.

Your wireless keyboard set is now connected.

hope this helps

My power switch on gateway desktop, GT5404 does not turn on it only flashes briefly then goes off.

Suggest;

1) FOLLOW Anti-Static Precautions

Anti-Static Precautions:

Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit), the delicate hardware components inside a computer.
Relieve your body of Static BEFORE reaching inside your unplugged from power computer.

Computer on a table, computer unplugged from power, computer case open;
TOUCH an unpainted surface, of the metal frame of the open computer case.
This action will relieve your body of Static.

IF you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, be SURE to Touch the metal frame again upon your return.

The front of your computer is the Front Panel. The area of contact pins, that the main wires from the Front Panel go to on the motherboard, is the Front Panel header.

There are two contact pins that the Power On switch wires connect to.
I would like you to jump across those two pins, and see if the Power Supply comes on;

Gateway Support > GT5404 Desktop PC > Main Support page,

http://support.gateway.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=2916

Click on the Support Documents tab.
(Driver / BIOS / Applications / Patches / Support Documents / etc)

Click on -> 1009371 - Support Documents

Click on Components in the list.
Scroll down to the Motherboards subheading.
Click on the blue -> 4006158R - Intel (Coryville) 945G Motherboard

In the list click on Product Views
Click on O - Front Panel Connector (Front Panel header)

Pins 6 and 8, which are the two pins in the Red areas, is for the Power On switch.

http://www.directron.com/atxswitch.html

The above ATX power on switch is used a Lot.
It is inside the plastic Power On Button assembly.

If this is the correct style of Power On switch, and yours is bad, you can use a hair dryer to gently soften the plastic of the Power On Button assembly, and replace the Power On switch.

Do Power On switches go bad? Yes. A LOT.
Those who do not know how to diagnose usually wind up replacing the motherboard, or Power Supply.

For additional questions, or to have me clarify any of the above, please post in a Comment.

The factory installed drivers and applications can be re-installed by using Gateway eRecovery

Click Start, and then All Programs
Click Gateway, and then Gateway eRecovery Management
You may be prompted to enter or create a password. This password will be required to use eRecovery in the future.
In the next window on the left toolbar, select Restore.
Choose Reinstall Drivers or Applications
Choose Contents
Choose the driver or application you wish to install
On the right, click the Install link and follow the prompts.
The computer should restart when installation is completed. If it doesn't restart, manually shutdown and restart the computer by pressing and holding the power button until it powers off. And then start it as you normally do.

Gateway 3200S. will not begin to power up. a green led is on at the top of the mainboard. that is the only indicator of power.

Dear Rythmickarma,
As you said the main power LED seems to be glowing but the system is not powering on... so there are few things to check here:
  1. Remove all other connections apart from Power supply, keyboard, mouse and monitor and see if that makes any difference.
  2. When the computer normally boots up there is a POST check Beep sound from CPU .. do you here any beep?
  3. When you tap on numlock key on your keyboard, do you see numlock LED toggle between ON and OFF state?
  4. Is there any signal on monitor .. When disconnected from the CPU, the monitor should show Self test signal .. does it happen?
  5. Open the chassis and check if you can feel the spinning of Hard drive...
  6. Remove the power supply cord from the back of the computer and press and hold the power button for few seconds .. this would drain the accumulated power from the CPU components .. now reconnect the power supply and see if that makes any difference..
Please try the above steps and let me know. Hope that helps.

Srinivas

Hp 530 laptop = dead no lights/nothing...power supply reads 19.2 volts with meter.son spilled drink on keyboard..suggestions?

Remove battery and power. Take apart as much as possible. wash any wet/sticky parts in de-ionised water (as used for topping up batteries), allow to thoroughly dry before re-assembling and powering up. Leave at least 24 hrs to dry.

Try not to get circuit board too wet, but if it does not work then you have nothing to lose!

Liquid on keyboard can be very difficult to fix as damp gets under the membrane - even if computer works the keyboard may not but you could always use USB keyboard.
If you have any Silica Gel packets, put notebook and all parts in a plastic bag with them to absorb all moisture (but make sure no powder gets into the components).

Good luck!
