hi there i have exactly the same problem and it is a 500GB disk as well. the only difference is that, my computer regcognises the disk but then i still get and error message saying file/folders is corrupted and cannot access the disk.

sadly i desperately do not want to format the disk as all my songs are on there and i will lose then.

also the disk is external and i connect via usb.

plug the hard drive into a different usb port, or take it to a friends computer and try it there, if it works the problem is in your usb ports, these issues are hard to solve, but first make sure the drive is actually ok

You could download and install Seatools, free, from the Seagate website (Seagate incorporates Maxtor). You can run a check and possibly repair the disc if it is damaged. Seatools and can also automatically report on the manufacturer's 5 year warranty, and provides a reference to have it repaired under any guarantee which may remain.

I have maxtor basic 500G ex works fine when I plug into old laptop with XP, but when I plug in to new laptop with Windows 7 it says I have to format drive..Why is this?

Try opening the device manager and changing device removal policy to "Better Performance" (remember to always safely remove the device afterwards or you'll likely lose data).

Also, verify that the partition type is recognized in Local Computer > Drive Management and the drive letter doesn't conflict with anything else.

Not recognised by computer

You gotta partition it first. http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/help/d9a4d35e-efdf-406c-a049-0860180129a71033.mspx

Except don't format the ones that already have a Letter (or u screwed urself there)

MAXTOR EXTERNAL HD IS NOT OPENING

Does it give you an error message ? Are you running Windows XP or Vista? If so post it here so the problem can be further narrowed down.
You might want to try a chkdsk.

In Windows XP and Vista both, a shortcut to get to the command console is holding the Windows Key and pressing R.

in the command console, type:
chkdsk X: /f /r

Where X is the drive letter of the drive giving you problems.

This will run a chkdsk on your external, restoring files and folders that cannot be accessed.

I also have a Maxtor External hard drive and have to do this quite often. It's pretty frustrating.

Installing the external drive

In XP and Vista no need to install.
They will detect automatically.
To know, goto Windows explorer.
Find drive letter other than your local drive.
Usually called "removable disk".

I get a backup, but with a lot of error messages

Microsoft has some hidden directory levels and files in VISTA and in XP that are visible only when the settings for the directories in which they exist are changed from the hidden setting.  It's tedious, but possible.  I assume, then, that what you were unable to copy to your backup are these hidden files.  They're placed that way as a default in the Windows install to protect the user from accidental "mistakes". Example:  Under "users", {name},AppData,Local,...
