Re: How do you remove the agitator on a Maytag Dependable...
If this is a Maytag Performa or Atlantis model all you have to do is remove the center cap on the agitator by pulling on it and locate the agitator bolt underneath. Loosen the bolt, and the agitator should pull straight up.
If this is a Maytag Dependable Care series there will be 1/4 inch screw along the side of the agitator towards the bottom. Remove this screw and the agitator will pull straight up.
I hope this helps you.
PS If the problem is due to the build up of fabric softener, soak in some hot water to loosen it up. Fabric softener is essentially a form of liquid wax and it is common for it to accumulate and clog the dispenser in this manner. Periodic cleaning is recommended.

The agitator in your Maytag Dependable Care washer uses a back-and-forth motion to move your clothes from the top of the washtub to the bottom and back to the top again. The fins on the side of the agitator help facilitate this movement. When one of the fins sustains damage or the agitator fails to move, you must remove the agitator to make the necessary repairs.Disconnect your Maytag Dependable Care washer from the electrical wall outlet. Turn off the valves supplying water to the appliance.
Open the washer's lid to access the agitator. Look for a 1/4-inch hex screw recessed in an opening about three-quarters down the side of the agitator.
Insert a 1/4-inch nut driver into the opening in the side of the agitator. Fit the nut driver over the head of the screw. Turn the screw counterclockwise to remove it.Grab the bottom of the agitator with both hands. Pull the agitator from the bottom of the washtub.
Liquid Softener was clogged up over time. 1-Put hot water in the place of the Softener slowly and let it over flow to dissolve the solidified liquid. 2-Keep doing this until you see water at the bottom of the tub. 3-Run a small load to clean out the gum.
Hello mab2005, Take a look at this post regarding removing Fabric Softener dispenser and clean out and see if it helps. The bleach dispenser is a bit more difficult to clean up I did not bother. You can also lift the washer top using this process to make sure the fabric softener and bleach dispenser drain holes are not blocked. To raise the top of the machine; Insert a flat blade putty knife approximately 2.5” from the left and right sides of the washer top, depress the spring tabs securing machine top to the washer base.See page 33 of the Service Manualfor putty knife insertion point. You might find something in the Use & Care section of the service manual that might help, I have never looked. You may have mold built up as I and other users have, see the attached Pic.If I were going to replace a tub seal I would clean out this mold during that repair process. This is the process I'm going to try sonn and I will let ya know if it works. Start a quick wash once the water fill sequence starts I would pause the washer.I would then remove the front panel (as I show in the pic) and view the tub while I very carefully over fill with water to slightly above the mold ring.I would then throw a gallon of bleach in start a continue the quick wash to agitate the solution for a few minutes pause the washer and let sit for a while. Then continue the quick wash thru the complete cycle. I would not try this until I give it a try I’ll let ya know how this works outs. The tangle problem is inherent to the machine design with the tumbler rotation action to agitate the wash load. Hope this helps.
It depends on what model Maytag washer you have. If you have an Atlantis or Performa model Maytag you remove the agitator by, first, pulling the agitator cap and softener dispenser off. Locate the bolt on the center post and and loosen. The agitator will pull straight up to remove. If this is a Dependable Care model Maytag, there's a 1/4 inch screw located on the SIDE of the agitator about 3 quarters of the way down. Locate this screw and loosen. The agitator will pull straight up to remove. I hope this helps you.
On a MAV6000, you should be able to pop off the fabric softner cap, remove the fabric softner cup underneath, and finally remove the bolt underneath to lift up the agitator. (rocking the cap back and forth is usually the best method)
