Question about Canon PowerShot SD850 IS Digital Camera

1 Answer

Hand Icon I just bought the Canon SD850 IS & am familiarizing myself with it. (or trying to) As soon as I inserted the memory card an icon showed up at the bottom of the LCD. It looks like a hand in the "stop" or "halt" postion. It stays there even when all of the other data on the screen is turned off. I cannot find an explanation for it in either owner's manual. Can you plese tell me what it means?

Not only do I have the same hand icon problem, but my display is black other than the icons, menu, etc. The flash is set to auto. Pushing the disp button does not work; it only beeps. The indicator lights never flash when you turn it on. When I take a picture it turns out as black as the display when viewed on the computer. It's new out the box!

I also have the hand icon problem and I have had this camera for 6 months without this problem. Darntoothysa is wrong about the light factor. I tried to take a picture in normal daytime sunlight and even that does not work. I also changed memory cards but the hand persists. Nothing about it in the owners' manual. Help!?!

Hi

It means there it not enough light to take a picture without it being blurry and you should switch the flash on. Try setting the flash to Auto and you should be fine.

Happy shooting from Darntoothysam com (an affordable digital camera repair business)

Canon SX500 IS shows a camera icon with triangle icon on it which disables the camera settings? Please suggest

It is an indication, the camera is disabled. Not telling you what caused it. Please remove and reinsert the battery once and the memory card too. Check if the card is not locked. On SD(XX) cards is a little notch. It should be in the up position.

How do I format the memory card?

You can format your memory card in one of two ways 1. the camera menus usually have a functionality to format memory cards. Explore the camera menu a bit and you will find it. 2.You can insert the memory card in the card reader of your laptop or USB card readers sold separately. When you plug in the card in your laptop it will show up as a removable disk in My Computer right click on the removable disk icon(make sure you are selecting the right removable disk icon) and select format.

Unable to open the existing files and is showing "MEMORY CARD ERROR" when my canon IXY DIGITAL 600 camera is swithed on.

First try to recover all the images with a program like the one you can download here, which is free:-

http://www.easy-flash-recovery.com/

Then format the card, either by:-

1.) Format by using the menus in the camera [Review> Setup> Format]

or if that fails:-

2.) Format by inserting the card into the PC or using a card reader.
Then right click on the memory card's icon in the 'My Computer' window to bring up the format option, then format the card again in the camera itself to ensure compatibility.

Hello, I bought a SVP Cybersnap LS Digital Camera on 01/06/11 and I got the SDHC card at the same time. Manufacturer states SD or SDHC are allowed to be used.. I have tried to format the SDHC card in the...

Hello, I would check if the card has a physical lock on it that slides back and forth on the card. If this doesn't work you can try to format the card with your computer.
1. Insert card to computer via card slot or card reader.
2. Locate it using the "my computer" icon or "computer" from startup menu depending on operating system. xp,vista,windows7 etc.
3.right click on card icon and select "format" option
4.After this is completed try to format in camera
5.If this still doesn't work make sure memory slot in camera is clean debri could cause reading errors.
6. If possisble try using a different card to see if it works. Do this to try to isolate the problem
Hope this helps

The memory card slot feels tighter than usual. after i put in the memory card and turn on the camera, i get the message of "no memory card."

Make sure you are inserting the card in exact manner as illustrated in the camera manual or near card insertion slot.
Try to check into the memory card slot if any of the contact pins are not damaged.

Camera says "card error"

Either you have pulled it out of the computer without disconnecting the hardware with the little green Icon ( at the right hand side of the computer ).

Or if you just brought it inserted it into a camera and it said " Card Error " then the contact points need cleaning , if you need help respond and I am more than happy to help

Thanks

Batttery icon shows low battery even though new batteries are ins

I am not sure if this will address your problem but it is worth trying.

Make sure the record/playback mode switch is not in an intermediate position. Push it firmly all the way up. Also ensure that the mode button is not between clickstops. Then try to operate the camera

If that does not help, try the following. Take all the batteries out, including the lithium battery which keeps the clock going. Also take the SD memory card out. Leave the camera sit overnight.

Obtain new batteries - conventional alkaline AAs and a lithium type CR1220.

Next day, clean all the contacts for the AA batteries with a cotton-bud and contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol. Let dry. Then insert the new lithium battery. Next insert the new AAs and try to turn the camera on.

If it works, insert the SD card. If it does not work then there is probably an internal problem and it should be serviced.

Canon SD850 IS showing "unidentified image" after pic is taken

we have just experienced both of the above problems. We are using 2G SD card from Kingston. After about 400 pictures set to mdeium resolution we get many pictures with the ? mark unidentified image. I see that each image takes up about 2M of space but the image information is not stored so you can not open the file. Also other images have the shaded problem as above.

does anyone have any ideas about this. Is it the camera or the SD memory? We just bought the camera about 3 weeks ago and are now thinking of returning it
