Changed hardrive now says no bootable device insert boot disk. dont have boot disk

Turn on the PC.

Supply the CD-ROM / DVD holding your preferred operating system - Windows, Linux, etc., into the CD / DVD tray and close the tray.

Wait up to 30 seconds for the CD / DVD drive to stop spinning

Turn the PC off.

Wait 15 seconds.

Turn the PC on.

Let the PC boot from the CD-ROM automatically / instruct the PC to boot from the disk in the CD / DVD drive.

Supply information as prompted.

If you do not have a CDROM/DVD, you will need to contact the PC manufacturer to obtain a start up disc & driver disk as needed. Explain to the support person that the old drive failed and a new one has been installed. No disk images were retrievable from the old hard drive. This should tell the person that you need everything to get this machine working as factory fresh once again.

You could purchase / download a different Operating System too - but this will likely cost much more than obtaining disks from the PC manufacturer.

Good luck!

I just installed an old hard drive from my now defunct HP Pavilion DV9000. It went into my ASUS G50VT. I can get the drive to show up in Bios but will not show in Windows. I am wanting to save some...

If you want to try out Linux before doing anything to the Windows hard drive, check out Live CD (or Live DVD) linux distributions. They will let you boot from the cd or dvd disk and have a full linux installation up and running, all without changing a thing on your hard drive.
Of course, any work that you do will be lost when you shut down the system (since you can't write to the DVD-ROM disk) but some distributions will let you create a file on the Windows hard drive to save settings or other state info.

Dell dimension 5100 original partitions have been wiped .. Now need to reinstall xp . I can not. Selected boot device not available. can not do ctrl-f11 anymore of course btw just in case you were thinking...

If you are getting message the message "selected boot device not available" that is because you have do not have a bootable HDD (Hard Disk). Please do the following:

Insert the Windows XP Operating system Disk.
Restart the computer and start Tapping the F12 key, It will give you the boot options.
Select to boot from CD/DVD-Rom
When prompted press any key to boot from CD-Rom
Once the computer is booted from CD, follow the instructions to install the Operating system.
Note: You can also go to BIOS (by pressing F2 or Delete) and change the boot device to CD-ROM

Once you finish installing the Windows Operating system. You can go ahead with installation of your Linux Operating system. After you finish Installing Linux you will get the option in GRUB to select the Operating systems.

If you have already installed Linux and want to install the Windows, Follow the same procedure but it will directly boot Windows after you finish Installing Windows. You will have to write the GRUB again for your Linux system.

Please get back for any further assistance.

How can i install Linux OS on my laptop? please help

do you want to have Linux while you are also having Windows? Then is will be a dual boot. To do this, have another partition of your hard disk empty. Like C (windows) and Drive E(free partition).
Download the latest version of ubuntu linux and use the bootable cd to install ubuntu on the other partition

When you start your computer Press F2 or F12 to make changes in Boot sequences.Make the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM 1st in the Sequence. Save the Changes and Exit. Before rebooting put the XP CD inside the CD-ROM Drive and reboot.
If you donot have Driver's CD of Motherboard,it is better to make Driver's CD before reinstallation.
