Question about Sharp R-1480 Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Sharp R1870 We have a Sharp R-1870 Microwave/Convection oven in our 2005 Fifth Wheel. Suddenly it will only operate for 59 seconds at a time. What could be wrong and can we fix it ourselves?

Thank you for your help. I also saw something like this from you when I looked at my models site after finding this site. I have Sharp R1870. I am assuming that we must remove the microwave from the above stove spot in the RV in order to get to this area. Is it safe to try to replace the switch and damper motor ourselves or the damper door? We live in Bellevue, WA and the closest Sharp repair place seems to be in Kent, WA.

It is not clear how and where to send the $5.00 for the switch for the Sharp R1870 microwave.

Thank you William. I ordered the universal switch through paypal just now. I hope this solves our problem.

We ordered the Sharp Damper motor #RMOTDA268WRZZ (also labeled as a stir motor) from the nearest Sears store and that solved our problem. Price was just a little over $8 plus shipping. I hope this is a newer motor with the defect solved. The old motor would hum with a 110v cord clipped across the terminals but no movement. Replacement was in tight quarters but if you move the big cap mounted on the back wall, (be sure to discharge it with a grounded lead) then you can get at the 1 mounting screw with a very short screwdriver. OF COURSE make sure the power is disconnected. ArtB art@rfstuff.com

Sorry. I meant to also say the hardest part was getting the microwave off the wall. There are two main mounting bolts with 3/8" heads under the metal vent filters, one on each side underneath. (Pull the metal filters back with the plastic tab to release them.) These long bolts go up at a 45 deg angle and attach to the wall mounted back plate. After removing these (be sure you are holding on as you do) if the microwave does not budge then you may have screws thru the upper shelf where it is mounted. The rear bottom of the microwave rests on a lip of the wall mount in back. Unfortunately the idiots who installed ours added an L bracket to the top for added support but they pop riveted it to the top of the oven right through the front bracket. We had to drill these out before we could slide the cover back off the microwave. (after removeing 1 screw on top and 4 on the back.) After removing the cover you will see a blank metal panel covering the back half of the right side (from front). Remove this and you will see the motor just like in the picture shown below. Remove the long mounting bolt that runs through this compartment for easier access to the motor. 1 screw secures the motor on the right hand side and the other motor tab slides into a slot on the left. Unplug the blue and grey motor wire and replace the motor. Reassemble in reverse order. (The AC cord can be unplugged by pressing the lower tab on back side where it plugs into top of oven and pulling plug out of socket.) The switch that is located on top of the bracket send a signal back to the control board to tell it whether the vent is open or closed. It could go bad also but ours was only the motor.
Email me if you have any other questions. ArtB Art@rfstuff.com

We are having the exact same problem with our Sharp R1870. It will only operate for 59 secs on any cook cycle, and then shuts off. We were quoted over $300 by a sears repair technician for a new "brain board" but I am very sceptical as to whether that will fix it, especially having read about the damper. Can you tell me which damper parts you replaced, and whether that fixed the problem for you.

This is a problem in one of the damper-related components, most likely the switch, but it may also be the motor or the damper door.

The damper is a door inside that opens or closes depending on cooking mode. If the controller senses that the door is not in the right position, it will shut down the cook cycle.

Sharp models stop after 59 seconds.

See the attached sample photo for a typical damper assembly.

We have the applicable service manuals for these models and have uploaded it to our site here and here to help you.

The best place to order Sharp parts is Tritronics.

Sharp microwave r1870 only runs for 59 seconds

If it consistently runs for exactly 59 seconds, and shuts off, it's probably the control panel.

If it runs approximately that length of time, you might have a defective thermal protector on the magnetron, or the magnetron is running too warm for some reason.

Hi,

I see its some time ago now that you posted this and perhaps you've fixed your micro already or replaced with a new one. I have the same Sharp r-967 microwave which had the same 59 second problem. I researched a bit online found the sevice manuals and tracked the problem down to be the damper motor. I managed to buy one online and replace it quite easily. There are some diagrams online when searching for this problem but for different sharp models where the damper is near the door fixings. Its not the case on r967, its behind the circuit board and easy to remove with a stubby screwdriver. You can find spares from this place. 5 minute job. The 59 second thing is likely to be the either the door switches or the damper motor. Switches are between £5-10. All mine were fine so didnt have to replace any. A quick voltmeter test can check them.

I paid £26 in delivery. Hope it helps if not too late!

Amana OTR Convection Microwave runs 59 seconds and shuts off

This sounds like either a thermistor or a damper switch/motor problem.

No matter what time i put in it cuts off in 60 seconds on a sharp

This sounds like a bad damper switch or motor. Double check the shut off time....... see if it's actually 59 seconds..
When you unplug the unit from the wall for 2 minutes then plug it bad in, you should be able to faintly hear a motor run for a few seconds. This is the damper motor running. This will verify that the motor is operating.....
Also, check the thermistor.
