Refrigerator portion on top does have cooling but freezer on bottom works fine. I have read that the cooling all happens in the bottom and a fan transfers cool air to the the top.

if the fridge part is cool and freezer is fine what problem are you having?is the fridge not cold enough? a common problem with bottom mount freezers is the freezer door doesn't get closed all the way, warm air enters the freezer mixes with the zero degree air and freezes up the air ducts, when you open the freezer door you should hear the fan blowing,if it is check the ceiling in the freezer to see if ice is on it,check the packages for frozen water droplets and stick your hand in the fridge where the air ducts are to see if you can feel cold air blowing into the fridge,if you can't feel air blowing into the fridge, unplug it,open the freezer door, remove the top basket and remove all the food out of the bottom basket, with a hair dryer blow into the back wall into the vent holes and melt out all the ice in the ducts, you'll see water dripping down through the vent holes, when the water stops dripping plug it back in and see if the fan is blowing the air into the fridge.also you can remove the bottom kickplate and you should see a tech sheet in it,read it and it will tell you how to put the machine into defrost,it will stay in defrost for like 20 minutes, you can do this instead of unplugging it, there's a heater that comes on behind the back panel in the freezer, this can help you melt out the ice but if it seems to hard to do just unplug it.

The refrigerator is not cold only cool. the freezer door got accidentally left ajar and got ice build-up on the food. Ever since that the refrigerator portion is only slightly cool not cold. I moved the...

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. The ice may have also stopped up this opening blocking the air flow.Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

Top Freezer works fine but there is no ice building up in freezer the bottom fridge not cooling properlyThings are not as cold as they should be

Remove the back panel from the freezer to verify no ice behind the freezer panel. Look inside the air vent on the freezer panel for ice buildup. Make sure the freezer control is set to minimum not coldest freezer.. Make sure the freezer fan motor is working.

Whirlpool freezer and the refrigerator.

Chances are your defrosting clock is stuck or quit working.
The clock works as timer to set time for defrost, at which time it stops the compressor, and turns a heater tube next the cooling coils to melt ice. It depends on your expertise if you want to try replacement,as most replacement are universal, and some rewiring is sometime involved. The clock is usually in front at the bottom behind the removable grill, or in the back. It looks like a square box with a dial that has a one way turn knob. To check use flat screwdriver to slowly turn dial (you can only turn one way) until the compressor stops, then wait to see if compressor starts back on it's own (it might take as long as 30 min.).
If it does not start it's bad and need replacement. Of course you can turn dial again until it starts again so you can use fridge. If it does start it could still have been the problem where the clock got stuck, and you got it going again by turning the knob, but let it run. If it works for a while and then have the same problem again the replace clock.
Hope this helps you
