Time and date are correct. There is no Exit Menu, but I hit escape to exit as instructed at the bottom of the screen and it took me back to the same black screen with the same message.

No, there is a save changes, discard changes, and return to setup and that's it.

  • nikkiw10584 Aug 11, 2008

It still went back to the same screen with f1 and f2.

I am pretty sure it is more than 3 yrs old, we got it from a friend. When I press f1 it just beeps but stays at the same screen.

Press F2 and enter BIOS menu - find Exit Menu and select
'Reset to defaults' -

Check the time and date setting in BIOS menu - correct it if wrong.

then Exit and Save.

If time/date was wrong - you may need to replace the internal button cell battery on the mainboard.

    No - No - No

If you press Esc then it will not change anything. You must find a Save and Exit menu (try pressing F10).

Did you find 'reset to defaults' ?

OK, do the Return to Setup defaults and then Save changes

    Hi

It is possible that the battery on the mainboard needs replacing - is the mainboard more than 3 years old?

Look for a button cell battery on the mainboard and put a new one in. Make sure the system is unplugged when you do this.

Normally, if this is dead, the time and date will be wrong though, so I am not sure that this is the problem, however it is all I can suggest.

P.S. What happens if you press F1?

No bootable device detected

If you strike F1, the system retries as said in the comment. That does'nt solve anything. Rather strike F2 which allows to enter the setup menus of your computer.
In this area you should understand what you are doing. Any update of setupdata may prevent further restart. At least take note of values and changes. You exit setup via a question "update Y/N". Then the computer restarts.
Anyway, in the setup menu you may inspect the devices and see if you the system identifies the disk. If not it may come from a bad connection of hard disk (sata pins, ...) or from low level disk information (format information).
With setup menu you may get in the boot order menu, that allows for the selection of an alternate boot media. You may boot on an installation media, ( install DVD generally, like originall windows install DVD) in order to understand and repair the situation, or from a rescue system like UBCD. You may also try Ubuntu from the CD without installing, just to verify if you may see the disk in the configuration.

Heloo sir i have a problem with my dell 170l when i start it it shows ''strike F1 to continue, F2 to run the setup utility'' when i click f1 it show ''f1 to retry boot,f2 for setup utility'' plz help me...

Hit F2,look in setup to see if the hard drive is recognized and check that the date and time are correct.
Then hit esc key. it will ask if you want to save changes, click yes. It should boot and probably ask you to hit F1 or F2 again., unless there is a problem with the CMOS battery, which may need to be replaced.
If you hit F1 to continue, it will boot, but your time and date will be off.

My Laptop is Dell Latitude D600 (A16) Everytime I tried to power up, Splash screen appears with blue bar and when going into next screen this message appears " No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry...

Check your BIOS, by pressing F2 and see if the hard drive is recognized. It should indicate the MFR next to the hard drive listing. If it's not there, then you might have a bad hard drive. If it is there, try re-installing the operating system with the set-up disk. You can also go to the Dell website, enter you service tag number, and get technical support for your particular laptop. It might have a recovery partition in the hard drive to recover to factory settings.

Can't factory restore dell inspiron 531 (windows xp).

You might want to try going into setup and setting your boot drive options to DVD drive as your 1st, HD as 2nd and Floppy as 3rd. Put your windows disk in the DVD before boot and run the program from DVD.

From the Bios, load all the default settings and then check the bios SATA port settings. If it is set to AHCI, change it to IDE to boot from Hard Drive. This should solve the problem

Dimension 3100 Won't Boot

Make sure your HD Cables are all firmly plugged in, and that all drives are starting when you turn on the computer. You can tell with harddrives as they will slightly whine, and have a small, steady vibration to them. If they are all starting, and all cables are fully seated, check in your Setup utility that the drives themselves are Auto-Detect. If none of this fixes your issue, you may have to refer your computer to a computer repair shop.

Hope this helps!
