Check if the adapter is disabled, go to network connections if your running XP or go to network and sharing center then click on manage network connections, the icon should indicate if its enabled or disabled. If you don't see any wireless connection icon there is a possibility that the drivers for your wireless adapter is not installed properly or it corrupted.
