I have a JVC Camcorder Model GR-SXM920. When I begin to playback or record now, it gives me an error message that says "E-03, Unit in Safeguard Mode. Remove and Reattach Battery". I have removed power from the unit 3 times with no luck. I still get the error message. What can be done short of taking it in for repair to a service center to get the unit to work and remove the error message? It's not worth spending over $25 on for repairs at this point.

SOURCE: JVC safeguard

1. The mechanism is locked during mode shift.
2. The mechanism is locked at the mechanism loading
end, because the encoder position is skipped during
mechanism mode shift.
3. No power is supplied to the loading MDA.

In the case the encoder position is not shifted
to the next point though the loading motor has
rotated in the loading direction for 4 seconds
or more. This error is defined as [E01].

SOURCE: JVC VHS Camcorder

I'm not an expert, but I just ran across this about an hr. ago when I was trying to fix my own problem.
Take out the tape and push that little slider thing on the bottom over. Safegaurd means it won't record over what you have... it is safe... Hope that was it.

SOURCE: Shows fault E04 remove & reattach battery

Do a search of this problem and you will ind that every JVC owner is having the same problem. I finally got mine "reset" by powering the unit on in payback mode while holding down the "play" button. Then, turn it back off and power it on in the camera mode while holding down the "rec" button. This seems to have reset it and I've not had anymore issues SO FAR!
Good luck with it.

I'm getting an E04 ( error) when I try to record or play

Here is some information regarding the E04 error message from http://www.techlore.com/article/10974/JVC-Camcorder-Stuck-in-Safe-Mode/:

"JVC notes that you are also given a malfunction code when the unit is placed into safeguard. If it displays code 01, 02, or 06 you should remove
the battery and powersupply and wait for a while. Code 03 and 04 indicate that you should eject and reinsert the tape.

If neither of these solutions work, your only alternative is to bring it to a shop or send it to JVC for diagnosis or repair. Unfortunately, there is no other way to clear the condition."

This doesn't seem uncommon, and indicates a bad tape is loaded, or unfortunately, that the camcorder requires servicing.

Gr-dvl-520u trying to record or playback tape it goes into safeguard mode within 5 seconds. alternatly pressing play and still every 3 seconds advanced the playback without it going into safeguard mod

According to http://www.techlore.com/article/10974/JVC-Camcorder-Stuck-in-Safe-Mode/,

If you are getting E03 or E04 errors on every tape you try, it sounds like a servicing is required.

Downloading Video to my Computer from a JVC GR-SXM920

You need a video capture card that supports analog inputs. Connect the video and audio out jacks from the camera to the computer. You will need some sort of software also. The Movie Maker software that comes with Windows XP would work.
The little cord that came with the camera will not transfer the video.

Safeguard Mode 03

E03 is a mechanical fault on the mechanism,it may be the reel pulleys are bent and need to be straightened. If this is not a solution, take it to JVC agents, the mechanism is likely to be damaged if not repaired by the agents.

Safegaurd mode

Unfortunately this is a repair issue. There are several failures that can occur, none of which will be resolved without service, that create this safeguard situation. Often the fpc cable which carries sensor information to the micro has been injured and that requires repair. Good luck, magic seadog
