Question about GE Cooktops

Ge Monogram Gas Cooktop - won't boil water - burners seem like they are starved for gas

I have a GE monogram gas cooktop. Model ZG375NSD1SS. It has 5 burners. When I light any of the burners the flame flickers and the ignitor is constantly clicking.

The flames are blue but it seems like they are not getting enough gas to stay lit. There is no difference in the height or intensity of the flame no matter what setting the dials are on.

I've had the plumber check the gas supply line for any blockages and he found none.

Every other gas appliance in the house is working fine except the cooktop.

I've replaced the regulator with a GE regulator that is recommended for this cooktop. The regulator is installed properly.

I checked the manifold line to make certain there are no blockages using a small 1/4" sewer tape. Its clear.

I'm at a loss as to what to check next.

I bought the cooktop as a demo so there is no warranty.

Any insight into what the problem might be would be very much appreciated.

    textonor,

I checked the regulator and so did the plumber. It was installed correctly. I am a mechanical contractor and deal with piping and instrumentation every day.

After doing some research on the specs of an LP cooktop I recognized that the LP cooktops require 10" w.c. of pressure. The regulator provides 4" w.c. of pressure. So I dug into the cooktop and found a label that said....for LP service...

Problem solved. I ordered the conversion kit and it will be in Tuesday.

Thanks for taking the time to help me trouble shoot.

    Bret

Bret, lets give this a try. 1st look at the regulator. There is an arrow on it that has to point towards the cooktop. Put is on backwards and very little gas flow. I always advise this first as I have seen people tell me it is correct and when I got out there it was reversed. 2nd was this used as a live demo unit on Propane? If you are on natural gas, this will also happen. The 3rd thing I also check for in something in the gas line on the cooktop side. I had a unit that got some packing in the line and at 5 wc for natural gas, it doesn't take much to restrict. Hope this helps.

BOILING WATER SPILLED OVER FROM POT INTO COOKTOP AND NOW IGNITOR KEEPS CLICKING

Hi, water is a great conductor of electricity. It is likely nothing to be concerned about in this case though, if you light the burners and allow the water to burn off/evaporate from the ignitors it should be fine. It happens all the time with gas ranges and cooktops. Once the ignitors are dry they will stop conducting/sparking unwanted. Hope that helps calm your concern. Thanks for coming to "fixya" for your solution. Please take a second after reading this to rate the info provided to you. Good luck. Macmarkus :)

One burner requires a match to light

had same problem. Used fine sandpaper on the little head (just above the white ceramic) that creates the spark. over the years the edges of the littel metal ring had gummed up but a 1 min sanding got it down to shinny metal and it sparked nicely.

GE 36" Monogram Gas Cooktop - low flame

I would have someone come out. Perhaps a gas plumber first. Gas is not something you want to fool around with yourself.
