Question about PC Desktops

2 Answers

Hi, till recently I was conneted to the internet (AOL) via cable connected to a NetgearDG834G v3 Modem router with no problems. Replaced PC with laptop (vista home premium) and connected via cable in the same way as before no problems. Now I wish to use the laptop in wireless connection mode but will only give me a partial connection and no internet access. reapply the cable connection and its perfect. Laptop connects to other networks ok away from home but not here. What do I need to do. Thanks. Chris

Hi,

Initially, try assigning static IP address to the WiFi card of the Vista laptop. Further disable WEP or WPA security at least during the initial stages of configuration. You may need also to instruct Vista to connect to your WiFi even if it is unsecured.

In some other instances, the WiFi networking device may want to use its proprietary configuration rather than the built-in to Windows.

Pls post back brand and model of the new laptop (with Vista) as well as the wireless networking device attached to it.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post backas requested, how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Setup belkin wireless network

Hi,
1.Connect a Cat5 cable into the Ethernet port on the back of your cable or DSL modem. Plug the other end of the cable into the "Connect to Modem Internet/WAN" port on the back of the Belkin Router.
2.Connect a Cat5 cable into the "Ethernet" port on the back of any desktop or stationary computers and then plug the other end of the cable into one of the LAN ports on the back of the Belkin Router. Start with port one and work your way up with subsequent computer connections.
3.Turn the Belkin Router on by plugging the router into a power outlet. Allow 30 seconds for the router to fully boot up. All computers tethered to the modem via a Cat5 cable have access to the Internet.
4.Open the Wi-Fi Wizard on your laptop and turn on the Wi-Fi antenna. Once turned on, the Wizard finds all network connections in your area. Connect to your network to establish an Internet connection. Complete this step for each computer not tethered to the Belkin Router with a Cat5 cable.

Can`t connect to aol will not ping and ports don`t work

This means your router or modem has problem, connect straight from your modem and check if you have internet, if there is nothing? check the cable and the network card, if everything is fine, contact your internet provider.

Internet no longer working, but internal network is fine.

i agree with all the above.. it's definately clear as mud how the network is designed and or funtioning. The machines connected to the wireless d-link router.. are they via cat5 inthe wired ports or wireless ? is the server the machine thats connecting to the switch and wiress router and modem? i'd say reset all switches modems routers and machines.. shut them all down.. then fire the cable modem, then the wireless router then the desktop switch then the server, the workstations and the one lonely wireless.. run "ipconfig /all" on all machines and if they aren't all sharing common ips and access, provide the results here for further investigation.

Dell dimension 3100 and we received a wireless router from aol and we tried to connect via ethernet cable onto this pc and had no luck any ideas

If you have a modem connected to a wireless router that is connected to the computer, turn all the devices off and turn them back on in this order.
1. modem
2. wireless router
3. computer

let the device start up all the way before you start the next device. (I.E. let all the lights on the modem come on before starting the wireless router and let all the lights come on on the wireless router before turning on the computer).

Hope that helps.

Can Connect to internet via cable modem, but cannot connect from Cable Modem to LinkSys WRT54G router to PC to Internet ?

1. Make sure your cable modem is connected to the Internet port of the router.
2. Your computer should connected to one of the 4 ports at the back of the router.
3. Check the lights that are lit. Make sure the you have power(steady green), Internet, WLAN and Ethernet port light.
4. Press and hold the reset button on the router for 15 seconds.
5. After 15 seconds, release the reset on the router and turn it off.
6. Turn the cable modem off, too.
7. Wait for a minute. Turn the modem ON first. Wait for the lights on the modem to be ready.
8. Turn on the router. Make sure you have good lights on the router.
9. Check for Internet connectivity.

Im not able to connect to get the belkin router to connect to the internet

Make sure that the router is connected to the cable modem. The network cable from the modem goes into the Internet or WAN port of the router. Then your cable from the Ethernet port onyour computer goes into any of the ports labled 1,2,3,or 4.
after you are sure that the connections are right. Take the power cords off of the cable modem and the router. Wait 30 seconds, then plug in the cable modem in first, wait till the light are on the modem. Then plug in the power to your router. Restart your computer and you should be able to get on line.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Limited or no connectivity to the internet. my setup: the telephone port is approx 30m from where i need internet access. Originally I had a dlink wireless router set up but was connected via cable, now...

On which port of the D-link router did you plug the WRT160N router?

Do this setup.

Disconnect the WRT160N from D-link.

Connect a computer to port 1 of the WRT160N. Access the setup page by typing 192.168.1.1 on the address bar. you may need to type in the username and password for WRT160N. on the setup page Change the LAN IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1. save the settings.

Connect a cable from port 1,2,3 or 4 of the D-link router to the Internet port of the WRT160N. turn off everything then turn them on starting from cable modem>D-link >WRT160N then computer.

You should be able to access the internet.

it will as long as the modem/router is connected to a phone line, instead of the pc, the only cable connected to the pc should be a ethernet cable; or you have the pc networking set that it connects via another pc instead of through a gateway, re run the wireless network wizard.

Do a ipconfig at the command prompt and see if you are being assigned a ip from the modem. If not try rebooting the modem with the ethernet connected to modem and computer. then do ipconfig again to see if not getting internet ip, your card or modem eternet is bad. put in a new one and try again.

Re: Home Computer access to the internet

Hello Fignewton
Happy Holidays
this is a easy task, just go to add/remove programs in contro panel, and go ahead and remove the AOL 9.OVR. then all other things from AOL. eje, internet connection AOL. etc. then, reinstall the AOL 9. ONLY. depending on your internet connection, modem? wireless, cable, see if all work fine.
