It is possible that your fuser is failing. Turn the printer off, turn it around and remove the back door by opening it and then pressing on the lower left side of the door to disengage the pin. Pull the door out and then remove the fuser by pressing the two blue tabs on either side. Look closely at the two rollers inside the fuser by looking at the side that faces into the printer. Chances are that the upper roller will be damaged. Depending on the page count of the pritner you might want to have the upper roller replaced, or if page count is over 180,000 you will be better off buying a maintenance kit which will also come with the required rollers for the printer.

My Brother MFC-7420 Printer always prints black lines and splotches down the left side of my paper. This happens whether I'm scanning or printing from my PC. When I looked at my drum, it appears a

If you are seeing vertical streaks/black lines your primary corona wire is dirty and or the fax scanner may be dirty.
1)To clean the corona wire you take the drum unit and toner cartridge and place it on disposable paper to avoid spilling.
2) Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by sliding the blue tab from right to left several times.
3) Return the blue tab and snap it into the home position.
4) Reinstall the drum unit and toner cartridge.
5) Close the front cover.
Caution: if you do not return the blue tab to the home position it may repeat the black lines.

I have just collected a second hand HP 1600 printer and there is a 2cm green vertical line down the left side of the page and a 3mm line down the centre and 2 thin lines down the right side, help!

Hi,
Dots, Lines and smudges on the printouts are due to deteriorating cartridges and cleaning the green drum of the cartridge may help temporarily. Take out the cartridge and gently clean the roller/ green drum with a dry, soft, lint-free cloth wiping off the toner dots marks/ lines. (corresponding to the location where you are having a green line on the paper)
Also, make sure that the visible inside of the printer and the Black belt are clean and there is no spilled toner inside, which sometimes results in dots.
Moreover, streaks (thicker lines) and dots etc indicate faulty PCR Roller which is located behind the green drum inside the cartridge. Replace the Cartridge or get the PCR Roller changed by a professional.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

When you print each page has a gray/black line running down the page from top to bottom about 2.5 inches from the edge of the paper. Sometimes it is darker and other times it is lighter. We have tried...

While the line is showing up on the output pages.
Stop printing and put paper in the manual feed tray (tray 1).
Start printing again. As a page gets pulled into the printer about 1/2 way open the top cover.
Pull out the toner and look at the page inside the printer. If it doesn't have the grey/black line, get the fuser replaced. It is defective.

Just replaced black cartridge in my 2600n color laser. I have smudged about a half inch wide 2/3rds over the right of each page. It only smudges in black. I have recalibrated several times. Printed at...

If this just started after you replaced the toner cartridge, one would have to say that it is a bad toner cartridge.
Print something that smudges. Pull down the front cover and look at the cartridges. Pay attention to the top one(black).
Look at the drum on that cartridge. You should see the toner sitting there. Compare it to the other cartridges which should be clean.

My HP Laser Jet 4000TN printer makes a line along the right side of each sheet (about 2 inches in from the edge of the paper). How do I get rid of this?

3 possible options:

1 - Swap/ Replace the toner cartridge as it may be leaking
2 - the transfer roller may need to be replaced or cleaned(This is the roller you see once you remove the toner cartridge) easy way to tell is how much black toner you have in the bay of the machine where the toner cartridge sits
3 - the fuser needs to be replaced. IF the toner was leaking it can contaminate the fuser which will burn the black line into paper.

SMUDGE LINES

I'm gonna assume you have a laser printer. You might need a cleaning since some toner might have spilled when you replace your toner. Toner gets into the rollers inside the printer that pulls the paper thru and creates smudgy black lines.

Check out your local business supply store like Staples for Laser Printer Cleaning paper. It doesn't work 100% of the time depend how dirty the inside of the printer is. Maybe a quick fix then buying a new printer. Getting toner mess out is a a messy job.
