My computer is indicating fan error during boot up and then shutdown. I removed the fan and applied 5V dc to motor terminals. Doing this caused to fan to run normally.

This is normally the CPU fan - is it working?
Is it connected to CPU fan socket on mainboard or a different socket - it must be connected to correct socket or fan will not be detected?

I have a fan error on startup and pc shutdown

This might have to do with how the fan is being connected for power...if it is not connected to the motherboard and you are using some sort of controller....then you have to go into the BIOS (Setup) settings and tell it to stop monitoring the fan in question. All this is assuming that the fan in question is working!

Test your PSU or replace it if your power supply units fan is not working your PSU is faulty

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect/ boot up a computer hard drive

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they are probably old and faulty a computer needs its connections to continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error

hope this helps

How can i tell if the fan on my vaio CS31S isnt working properly? It seems to speed up and down and the laptop shuts down? Is it te fan or could there be another reason for this shutdown? :-)

Try blowing out any dust from around the fan with compressed air. If the fan is turning on and off a lot, this could be normal, depending on your processor, but if the system just shuts down fully and randomly, it would be a heat issue. The CPU is overheating and the failsafe mechanism is to instantly shut your computer down. The only way to avoid this is to raise the CPU shutdown temp in the BIOS settings, or if you can access the CPU, remove it and apply new, quality thermal grease. Also, ensure the fan is operating correctly during use and dont block any air intake or exhaust ports.

Your system fan has died and need to be replaced. You can look in your bios for a setting to ignore fan speeds, you may or may not have one depending on your bios. But be careful, if you can bypass the fan error, you risk causing harm to your computer by overheating the processer.

Fan error

fan error means that one of the fans inside the computer has failed and is no longer working causing the system to overheat. to solve this you must replace the fan that isn't working. you should try going to your local computer hardware store and ask them to fix the problem.

I want to buy a new CPU fan for my notebook

Fans are fairly easy to find and replace. Open the notebook and see what size it is (OD and thickness) in mm. Most run on 12v, but some are 5v. There should be some lable or marking on the fan. Then go to www.mouser.com, and select a fan that matches the dimensions and volts. Mouser has a large selection. Sometimes the connector for the fan is tiny, but it is a quick job to splice the new wires in place.
