Well I purchased the unit on ebay it was an as-is and I'm pretty savvy so I figured I may be able to fix it. Unable to really find out what is wrong with it though. I had purchased a brand new power supply for it and that wasn't the problem. It is a 60 gb model when i got it it had a sticker saying it was a "display unit" I'm assuming like the ones to play and use while in the stores. When I power it on it sounds like fans start up and then shut off and it beeps. If able I would like to be able to repair it on my own for two reasons, one just being able to and the satisfaction and two it obviously is not under warranty being purchased on ebay. If you were able to help in any way I would greatly appreciate it or if you would tell me what my options would be if I could not repair it. And if I am unable does sony offer anything ? Thanks in advance.
    -Kyle

Hey Kyle,

Well, I'm sorry to say that the display models are garbage. You can input a code to "unlock" the unit so that you can play games and movies, but you have to do it every time you power it on.
Also, I am still doing a ton of circuitry research to find out the cause of the immediate shut down. So far I have found one chip that has a 50 on it that is at the front of the motherboard that has no resistance through it but the chips along each side of the chip have resistance. So I'm thinking that it may be some sort of fuse chip that can blow when exposed to a drasstic shock, as in a drop. I have a unit that does the same thing and I am going to try and bypass that circuit tomorrow and see if it works. I'll let you know.
As for your options...
1. Resell it on eBay As-Is
2. Try and repair it yourself.
3.Contact seller you purchased it from and ask what the return policy is. Return to seller for a refund if it was not stated as a demo model in the auction description. (refer to "item not as described" on ebay) You can even file a dispute within 90 days if it was not as described, even though it was listed as-is!

I hope this helps you. I wish you much luck. If you have any more questions, please contact me!!

I reset ps3 because i thought it would be fixed then and i could log on ps nework but it didnt. i lost al the saved games and my trophys. is it possible to get it back?

There is no way to get back your saved data after reformatting the PS3's HDD. In the future it is highly suggested that you create a backup of your data before reformatting, this can be done through the settings on your PS3.

Sorry for the bed news...

hopefully I was of some help

Hi kdfrance

Try turning off media server on ps3 Go into the PS3?s Settings menu and navigate to Network Settings - Media Server Connection disable it thats my first idea which could be causing the issue..Secondly unplug your modem/router for 15 sec then plug back in...THEN FOLLOW STEPS

  1. Select "Network Settings" under "Settings" in the home menu, and then press the "X" button.
  2. Select "Internet Connection Settings", and then press the "X" button. When a message stating that the Internet connection will be terminated is displayed, select "Yes", and then press the "X" button.
  3. Select "Wired Connection" or "Wireless Connection", and then press the "X" button.
  4. Select "Easy" or "Custom" and adjust settings as necessary. Follow the on-screen instructions to adjust the required settings.
Note: You should always choose Easy before going onto to adjusting the Custom settings. In most cases, the Easy settings will work and are set automatically so you won't have to search for information that could have been gathered automatically.

Hope this info was helpful cheers nikki

When using my ps3 I have audio and no picture or picture and no audio when playing games and dvd's. This problem just happened recently, it worked before.

HI, you will have to do a troubleshooting process.

You connections might be faulty,
wrong connection setting,
Wrong resolution setting,
and other related problems.

Some users are reporting that although they are getting images on their TV, the content is distorted when playing DVDs or Blue Ray Discs. The most common cause of this occurs when you hook your PS3 to your TV through a VCR. Some types of copy protection built into older VCR units may cause the distortion. If this happens, just plug your PS3 directly into your TV and by-pass any other components.

Fortunately, most no-picture issues with the PS3 fall into one of the above quick-to-fix situations. If you still can't get a picture on your TV with your PS3 connected, you might want to check the material that came along with your console and look for the customer service number. Hopefully, your warranty will cover any work that might need to be done or provide for a replacement unit.

hope that helps.

need any assistance, you can pass your comments.

Take care

My ps3 80gb freezes half way thru the games I have never been on line so I can't imagine it having a virus like Steve Vaughn is saying it tells him. I can't find anyone in the Phoenix Az. area that can...

1st you should make sure wherever you are keeping your PS3 in VERY WELL VENTILATED as these things get really hot and it could indicate a heating issue.

Try more than one game when diagnosing this.

Have you tried resetting your PS3 back to initial state in the settings menu ? (I believe this will wipe everything so be careful)

If none of this helps you will need to either send it to Sony or find a local video game store that repairs these.

Hope this helps.
