Question about Canon EOS Elan IIE 35mm SLR Camera

Auto rewind problem

I have an elan IIe and it keeps auto rewinding after just a couple of shots are taken. Sometimes it makes it all the way thru a whole roll of film. I have two cameras doing the same thing. I bought the second one in hope that it would not do this. Any idea what's causing this and can it be fixed?

Thank you, that is the best answer I've gotten so far after seeking answers from stores such as Ritz. I will look into both solutions!

    Thank you again!

There are 2 things that can cause that problem. Many times it is caused by the user pulling too much film out of the film cartridge and laying it across the film plane, causing it to bunch up on the take-up roller when the camera back is closed.

Make sure the film tip extends no further than the orange indicator in the back of the camera.

If that is not the cause, there is probably a defect in the clutch that flips back and forth each time the camera winds the film. Sometimes they bind up and cause the camera to go into the rewind mode early. It would need to be looked at by a qualified camera technician to determine if that is the problem.

My 35mm film won't load. It keeps rewinding

Solution: Repair or replace auto-rewind system.
Cause: The built in auto-rewind system that supposed to work when film is finished but because it is faulty it receives wrong signal when film is lloaded. So the camera thinks the film is at the end of the roll.
Possible cost: $65-$75

The camera back button requires power to operate and as the electronics seem to be fried button pushing doesn't open the door. So is there a manual access way? thanks

I had a Canon Elan IIe and I don't recall having to have electronics to open the camera back.
Make sure you have a battery in it, turn it on look at the LCD panel and see if it has film in it.
If so you should be able to push the "mid roll" film rewind button located on the back left side it shows a film canister icon. Once the film has rewound into the canister release the back with the mechanical latch found on the left side (while facing the back of the camera) just push it down and the back will pop open. Those cameras are pretty darn good and the only thing I've seen friy the electronics is using an "old" type flash on the hot shoe and that takes the flash circuit board and melts the thing. I'd expect the camera battery is dead and you can't rewind the film back into the canister.

EOS 30 how to remove film from camera, as camera is dead no reaction to new batteries

The easy way is to use a film changing bag, if you don't have one follow the instructions below:

You need to get the film out manually. In a darkened room, just a very small/dim lamp, or door open where the light is in the next room.

First check where the lever/switch is for opening the camera, remember where it is. Then put the camera under some jackets/blankets to protect it form any light. Put your arms under the covering keeping them flat with the surface so no light can seep in.

Open the camera by feel then pull out the film canister and start winding the film back into the canister manually by turning the canister spindle, always keeping the camera and film and hands/arms protected from light under the covers. You might have to tug a bit on the film to get it from the take-up spool inside the camera.

Some cameras have a button on the outside underneath the take-up spool, which you press to release the spool, I doubt that your camera has this because it is auto winding & rewinding?

Camera does not rewind after end of film it spins, but does not engage the film. Joe M.

it is likely that this model of camera spins the entire roll onto the take-up spool, and then slowly rewinds one frame at a time until the last picture is taken. Then it has already almost rewound,

This shows up when you load the film. The cameras digital counter counts up to the number of pictures available, and counts downward each picture taken.

How to you re tension the starter spring

What has to be done is the BLOWER Housing must be removed from the engine. Then pull the rope all the way out, NOTE which way it is turning. Then stick a screw driver thru the spokes on the wheel and straight thru the housing, this will keep the rewinder from rewinding.
Then cut the knot from the cord. Remove the cord. Engage the rewinder wheel with your fingers pull the screwdriver and wind the spring as tight as you can. Re-install the screw driver thru the wheel so it can not rewind and reinstall the cord. When tying the knot ,make sure to use a light to melt the cord a little so the knot will not untie.
Hold the handle tight and pull the screwdriver and slowly let the spring wind in the cord.
Done

I just bought a second hand Contax RX but the film rewinding stars automaticaly after 5 or 6 shots, even in a 36 exposures roll. Is it a set mistake? Thanks. Julio

The auto-rewind is triggered when the film advance mechanism detects tension on the film, indicating the end of the roll.

It could be a couple of things causing the problem...

1) The particular roll of film you were using was wound too tight, or has got some moisture in it causing it to stick.

2) If it has done this with various rolls of film, it is likely that the clutch mechanism that detects the film tension is out of adjustment. This is something that a professional camera repair shop will be about to fix for you.

I'm not familiar with this particular model of camera, but there may be a facility to turn off the auto-rewind as a short-term fix.

Hope this helps!

Don't know how to rewind film

Hi there.
The film should auto rewind when it reaches the last picture and its been taken.
Take a look in the camera's menu.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!
