You need rely on professional file recovery tool to get them back. A popular one is asoftech data recovery program. This tool can deep scan your the computer and recover your lost files back without requiring extra skills. Here is the steps might be helpful to you:
1. Download this program on your compute. here is the link: http://www.asoftech.com/adr/
2. Install and start the program.
3. select the drive where your lost files located, click 'Next'. Now the scanning process will start to search the deleted files. After a while you will then get a list of recoverable files.
4. Press Recover to perform full recovery.

Hi opto_pus
I would use a recovery software :
Free Recuva works fine : http://download.cnet.com/Recuva/3000-2242_4-10753287.html
Do not try to recover all at once but each category at a time , documents , pictures , music ...etc...
If it fails , try this one . It's not free but very efficient : Tenorshare Data Recovery. It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data due to unwanted erasing , system sabotage, virus corrupted partitions, drives crash, physical damage,etc..

fanaudi .

You must try some Data Recovery Software. There are some free software available u can search them on google but I do not believe in free software as it will end up messing my computer with virus and spywares and whether it recovers your data intact or not is not guaranteed there are chances that u end up loosing your precious data. So I look for cheap and good software. For recovery software, I bought one before called Kernel for Macintosh, good thing is that it's one time payment and then it allows me to use forever. Take a look if you do not mind paying to get back your data, U can also download d trial version from http://www.datarecoverymac.com/
Using trial version u can preview d data recovered but to save it u hav to purchase the software

Cannot transfer files that are greater than 4GB

The lack of free space iis on your internal HD not the external. Whenever transferring files from one drive to another, you are acturally making a copy of the file to be transferred and sending the copy to the new drive. If your internal HD is nearly full, you can try to Cut and Paste the files to the external, or clear up more space on your internal b/4 tryiing to move the bigger files. Best of luck.

It whirs for a few seconds, stops, then whirs again for a few sec

The hard-drive is "dying".

Is it still under "warranty"?

When you have the serial-number of the hard-drive inside the external unit, access Western Digital's web-site, and check the Warranty Status.

Note that Western Digital (the maker of the external drive)
has a "Customer Loyalty" program. Enter the serial-number
of the hard-drive on their web-site, and you can purchase a new external hard-drive at a significant discount.

Help!! Western digital 500gb external hard drive ticking noise

Yes. This is going to sound strange. Put the drive in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer. Next day, take it out, hook it up, and see if it is recognized.

If so, under My computer, right click on the drive - click Properties - then Tools, then Error Checking. Check box Automatically Fix File System Errors. Let it run. If everything shows up, be ready to transfer wnat you want off of it.

Freezing shrinks the metal parts . Microscopically, but often enough to get stuck parts free enough to get working.

I just went through this with a 750Gig Book. now i have reformatted the drive (after transferring all over to new drive) and the clicking is gone and all disk checks are fine and i wonder whether to trust this device ever again... Hate to just throw out a large drive.

My 500GB Mybook world edition's mother board died.

It's the format that doesn't allow windows to access the data. Only way to recover is to get another external drive and transfer the data to it. Then you could reformatt the old drive to work with XP. Hope this helps.

Saying I can't copy 9gb file due to lack of free space, 433bg still showing free

that might be due to the drive being formatted as Fat32 which has a file size limitation of 4 Gig..open up my computer, and look at the properties of that drive..right click..and that might help you
