I dont know which computer you have but some computers have a built in Partition that has a Recovery and can be accesed when you turn on the computer and can do a recovery that way without using the recovery cd's. It all depends if we are talking about windows, or vista or sony, hp, dell , toshiba etc. I can tell you that if you just want to use your recovery disks it will erase all the personal data on your computer unless you back it up before hand, If you dont care about the data you can put the cd into the cd-rom and when the computer boots either press ESC key or F12 for Toshiba / Dell or F10 whichever is the CDROM boot key. Depending on the model sometimes the BIOS default is set to boot off cd rom and you wont have to press anything. After that you can follow the prompts for recovery it should be user GUI (Graphical User Interface ) Friendly.! Hope this answers your question.

Disk read error

it is entirely possible that the boot sector is damaged. if this is the case you need to boot with the cd that came with the machine, or a recovery cd you've made, and load the recovery environment. once their load the command prompt. it should just be a button in vista or 7 and it will automatically load in xp. once loaded type "chkdsk c: /r" no quotes. let it run, this will check for bad sectors and should fix the issue. try and reboot, and let me know what happens. if you don't have the recovery cd's or installation media you can download msdart, which has the recovery console built in. i went ahead and uploaded msdart, download the version you think you need. https://rapidshare.com/files/2296685117/ERD50_x86_WinXP_SP3_blueforce.ziphttps://rapidshare.com/files/2914560443/ERD60_x64_WinVista_SP2_blueforce.zip https://rapidshare.com/files/267688033/ERD60_x86_WinVista_SP2_blueforce.ziphttps://rapidshare.com/files/1400985026/ERD65_x64_Win7_RTM_blueforce.ziphttps://rapidshare.com/files/3314839442/ERD65_x86_Win7_RTM_blueforce.zip

UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME ERROR ON GATEWAY GM5045E WITHOUT RECOVERY OR WINDOWS XP DISC.

An unmountable boot volume error suggests that you may have a hard disk failure or at least some corruption to the hard disk which the system uses to boot Windows XP.
To try to resolve this problem you would need to use a specialist boot CD to try to repair the disk errors. One such disk is Hiren's Boot CD which can be downloaded as a CD image file (.ISO) then would need to be burnt on to a blank CD then the computer booted from this CD.
On the initial Hiren's boot menu, select DOS programs, then select Disk tools before selecting HDAT2 to perform the disk repair actions.
HDAT2 can take some time to complete depending on the size of your internal disk drive and the number of bad sectors or other errors encountered - the tool will attempt to repair bad sectors by reading, verifying, writing and re-reading / verifying the data.
If the disk can be recovered, then you may be lucky and the system will be able to boot but otherwise, you may still need to do some further recovery work for the operating system, in which case you may need a Windows install CD or other recovery CD media.

If HDAT2 finds a lot of unrecoverable errors then you should seriously consider replacing the drive - you should be able to recover data from the old drive using other tools on the Hiren's Boot CD, including booting the CD mini-XP environment and using the tools there too.

This error is when you try to use OEM recovery disks with a non OEM hard drive. The company recovery disks will not work, they do this to prevent software fraud. Sorry to say you will have to purchase a copy of windows and start over :(

If you have compressed the hard disk drive using the Compress drive to save disk space option under the Properties menu for your hard disk drive and have performed a non-destructive recovery or a system recovery, the following error message may appear: NTLDR is compressed. Press CRTL-ALT-DEL to restart. This error message is resolved by following these steps:
  1. Insert the HP Recovery Tools CD or Compaq Recovery Tools CD into the CD drive on the computer and restart the computer.Wait for the HP Recovery Tools CD or Compaq Recovery Tools CD window to open.
  2. Select Run Microsoft Recovery Console , click Next , and then follow the onscreen instructions. NOTE: If you are unable to open a recovery console, follow the Alternate steps .
  3. Press R to repair the Windows XP installation using Recovery Console.
  4. Enter the appropriate number for the WINDOWS installation, for example, the WINDOWS installation could be listed as 3: C:\WINDOWS or 3: D:\WINDOWS .
  5. If prompted, enter your Administrator password and press Enter . If there is no password, just press Enter .
  6. At the prompt, if the WINDOWS installation you selected in Step 4 was C:\WINDOWS, type: cd c:\Or, if the WINDOWS installation you selected in Step 4 was D:\WINDOWS, type: cd d:\
  7. At the prompt, type: attrib -c ntldr and then press Enter .
  8. At the prompt, type: exit
  9. Press the Enter key and immediately remove all discs or diskettes from the computer to allow the computer to restart. The error message should be resolved.
Alternate steps NOTE: These alternate steps work for HP and Compaq desktop PCs with Windows XP and a recovery partition. (M0st HP and Compaq PCs with Windows XP have a recovery partition on the hard disk drive.) These steps do not work if you have replaced the hard disk drive, replaced Windows with another operating system, or repartitioned the recovery partition. You can use the following steps if you are unable to open a recovery console:
  1. Turn on the computer. When the initial logo screen appears, press the F10 key repeatedly until a message about starting recovery appears.
  2. At the Recovery screen, click Advanced Options and then press the Alt and D keys at the same time to go to a command prompt.
  3. At the command prompt, enter the following: diskpart
  4. At the command prompt, enter the following: list volume
  5. Remember the drive letter next to line for the main hard drive; HP_PAVILION or PRESARIO.
  6. To close Diskpart, enter the following: exit
  7. At the command prompt, enter the drive letter followed by a colon (:). For example, H:
  8. At the command prompt, enter the following: cd \windows\system32
  9. At the command prompt, type the following: compact ntldr /u <the drive letter>:\ntldr For example if the drive letter was H, you would type: compact ntldr /u h:\ntldr
  10. Type exit and press Enter .
  11. Click Quit .The error message should be resolved.

Problem in the HP Palvalion laptop dv6607nr model

Try using a Windows installation disk instead of your recovery disk. If the Windows disk will boot and begin the installation process then you most likely have a faulty recovery disk. If it gives you an error there may be a malconfiguration in the bios.

Good Luck
