Question about Garmin Edge 305 GPS Receiver

Edge 305 shuts off during a short 1 hour ride

My Edge 305 seems to charge properly but when on short rides of one hour or so, it will shut off unexpectedly. I can turn it back on, but it may shut off again or when I get home and download to Training Center I only get partial maps of my ride or it shows a short lap and not the entire ride. Any hints?

    i have the same problem

  • garmin305bad Aug 09, 2008

My apologies, I first posted this as a solution and now I cannot seem to delete that. I'm new to this site.

I have the same problem. When I contacted Garmin they quickly diagnosed that my battery disconnects as a result of vibrations (like the ones you feel on your handlebars). Since I purchased this device over a year ago, their solution was for me to send it to them and pay $100 to get it fixed. Now one of the guys I ride with is having the same problem. I am very disatisfied with the Garmin 305's reliability. I'm not giving Garmin any more cash. (I paid $350 for this GPS 18 months ago!)

Does anyone know how to open the 305 so I can resecure the battery?

I've only had this unit since Christmas and I don't think its my job to try to open it and see if I can secure proper contact of the battery. I certainly would not pay Garmin to do it as they sold it in this condition. I do not have much vibration in the stem or bars when I ride. Any amount I have is within normal conditions and Garmin certainly should expect its unit to function in these conditions on a road bike. Maybe the best approach is to just return it.

I have the same issue. On longer rides over 1 hour I look down and my screen is blank. I can turn it back on but I lose data. Mine is 1 year old and I am very dissappointed.

Same issue-of course it got worse, right after the 3 month mark and with the holidays, couldn't do anything.  Bumps shut it down so it really is a useless HRM and Trainer.  I do like it's mapping and recording capability with the Ascent Program, but other than that, it's a POS and I'm pretty disappointed...wouldn't buy another.

I have had the same problem. I could tap it a few times and it would go off. Also, if I applied a little pressure to the sides, near the top of the GPS it would shut off. I just finished opening it and putting it back together.
I carefully removed the rubber using a small flat head screwdriver to get under it. I started at the bottom and pulled it away slowly with my fingers. The two parts of the GPS case are glued together and come apart fairly easily. Inside are little pins making contact with the battery side. I bent them up a little and used silicone to stick it back together. I am waiting for the silicone to dry and I'm trying it out.

I failed to mention that I used black Hi-temp silicone I had from an auto parts store. Also, I put a thin layer of silicone on the case where the rubber fits, put the rubber on, wiped off the excess and used electrical tape over the rubber to hold it in place. I hope this helps someone.

Didn't realize Yours was under warranty. IF you can get your money back I would do that.
I should have said that mine is not under warranty and I don't want to pay Garmin any more than I have. The one I opened is the 3rd Edge 305 that I've had. The other 2 quit working. If I could do it over again I wouldn't buy one of these even though I like it(when its working).

Used my garmin edge 305 today on the ride, it worked fine, powered off after the ride. Got home turned on to review my stats and then powered off and went to upload and wouldn't upload, so tried to turn it...

Edge 205 or 305 often crash, then impossible to power on again.

Here is the way to reset the Garmin edge :

Soft reset : hold mode and lap/reset buttons for 10 seconds
Hard reset : device should be powered down, hold start and mode buttons for 3 seconds then pulse press the lap/reset button.

After soft reset, you need to hold start button for up to 10 secs before it starts.

After hard reset, you will loose all your data, including profiles.

My edge 305 turns off intermittantly during rides and is not mapping the routes I ride completely

This is internal problem due to contacts that are getting dirty or spaced because of too much pressure on the USB port.

Better way is to unmount the device and solder wires in place of gold contacts.

Unmounting device is not easy, see following link

I will be riding a 340km 24 hr mtb stage race consisting of 6 stages in dec. How do I manage charging of my Garmin Edge 305 over what will be some 18hrs of riding with short breaks between stages?

Bring a portable PC device plus your USB cable, and a charged battery on your PC, Edge will charge when connected to PC via USB.
Any other powered USB source would also help charging.

However for a 24 hours trip, it is worth downloading your races on the PC and clearing memory, as otherwise memory will get full and waypoints will stop register.

How do I open my receiver to secure the battery?

IF the receiver is still covered by the warranty perioid, get it repaired or replaced by garmin or your dealer.

I have not had one of these in my hands and i haven't taken one apart, but it can't be too difficult.

Date not changing

After my ride I needed to stop the timer and reset the device. Then connect to the computer and download the history. It appears that that information I was downloading was from a previous ride.

Garmin Edge 305 missing gps tracking information

Do you get the graphs for the most recent rides OK, but not the first ones on your trip?

If so, the memory is full. The Edge 305 will hold around 15 - 20 hours of cycling if you use the "smart recording" mode - any more and it starts to overwrite earlier trips (though the summary info in "History" is preserved). The only way around this is to download rides to a PC regularly (not really an option if you are away from a computer!).
