Edge 305 shuts off during a short 1 hour ride

My Edge 305 seems to charge properly but when on short rides of one hour or so, it will shut off unexpectedly. I can turn it back on, but it may shut off again or when I get home and download to Training Center I only get partial maps of my ride or it shows a short lap and not the entire ride. Any hints?

- I've only had this unit since Christmas and I don't think its my job to try to open it and see if I can secure proper contact of the battery. I certainly would not pay Garmin to do it as they sold it in this condition. I do not have much vibration in the stem or bars when I ride. Any amount I have is within normal conditions and Garmin certainly should expect its unit to function in these conditions on a road bike. Maybe the best approach is to just return it.

Same Problem

-   Same issue-of course it got worse, right after the 3 month mark and with the holidays, couldn't do anything.  Bumps shut it down so it really is a useless HRM and Trainer.  I do like it's mapping and recording capability with the Ascent Program, but other than that, it's a POS and I'm pretty disappointed...wouldn't buy another.

-   I have the same issue. On longer rides over 1 hour I look down and my screen is blank. I can turn it back on but I lose data. Mine is 1 year old and I am very dissappointed. -   jeffbuske

-   My apologies, I first posted this as a solution and now I cannot seem to delete that. I'm new to this site.

I have the same problem. When I contacted Garmin they quickly diagnosed that my battery disconnects as a result of vibrations (like the ones you feel on your handlebars). Since I purchased this device over a year ago, their solution was for me to send it to them and pay $100 to get it fixed. Now one of the guys I ride with is having the same problem. I am very disatisfied with the Garmin 305's reliability. I'm not giving Garmin any more cash. (I paid $350 for this GPS 18 months ago!)

Does anyone know how to open the 305 so I can resecure the battery?-   garmin305bad

I have had the same problem. I could tap it a few times and it would go off. Also, if I applied a little pressure to the sides, near the top of the GPS it would shut off. I just finished opening it and putting it back together.
I carefully removed the rubber using a small flat head screwdriver to get under it. I started at the bottom and pulled it away slowly with my fingers. The two parts of the GPS case are glued together and come apart fairly easily. Inside are little pins making contact with the battery side. I bent them up a little and used silicone to stick it back together. I am waiting for the silicone to dry and I'm trying it out.

- I failed to mention that I used black Hi-temp silicone I had from an auto parts store. Also, I put a thin layer of silicone on the case where the rubber fits, put the rubber on, wiped off the excess and used electrical tape over the rubber to hold it in place. I hope this helps someone.

- Didn't realize Yours was under warranty. IF you can get your money back I would do that.
I should have said that mine is not under warranty and I don't want to pay Garmin any more than I have. The one I opened is the 3rd Edge 305 that I've had. The other 2 quit working. If I could do it over again I wouldn't buy one of these even though I like it(when its working).
