Hi there, i have a maxtor 3200 500gb external hard drive to which i inadvertently plugged my lap top power supply into. This is 19v dc as opposed to the 12v dc it should be. I have obviously blown the pcb which unplugs from the hard drive. Where can i source a replacement please?

It would be cheaper to buy a new chassis. You can buy these without a hard drive in and then put your hard drive inside.

I have a Maxtor external driver and the AC adapter is not working. I need a new AC adapter and local stores do not have it. How can you help?

There are "generic" power supplies that might meet your needs.

This is a response I gave to another user who had a different external HDD and needed a power supply.

The hard drive unit itself should be able to supply you with the required DC input voltage (hopefully there is some kind of label on the enclosure).

You could try one of these or something similar. It comes with 6 interchangeable heads and has adjustable DC voltage. This is just one of many available.

http://www.amazon.com/Hosa-ACD477-100-240V-Voltage-Adaptor/dp/B000Z31G3M

I cannot guarantee any of these supplied heads will fit your particular drive (same with the dc voltage). Some local retailers
often have these types of adapters and you might be able to determine what size you need by looking at one. Most of the

Externall HDD need 12VDC and 18+ watts of power.

Here is an online site also.

www.12Vadapters.com

I have used DC units similar to these in the past when I have lost a power supply.

Hopefully with a minimum of effort you can get a working solution.

Do I need a seperate dc supply for my Ultra traveldrive usb 2 Why won't it install on my lap top.

> do I need a separate power-supply?

It depends. If the disk-drive inside the enclosure is a 2.5-inch "laptop" disk-drive, then it will draw the necessary electrical power through the USB cable. However, if the disk-drive is a 3.5-inch "desktop" disk-drive, it does require an external power supply.

Will it install on some other computer?

Do I need only one cord (usb) to connect to my laptop?

The "physically-smaller" external hard-drives draw power through the USB cable.
The "physically-larger" external hard-drives require an external power-supply (just like a laptop requires an external power-supply).

Check the casing for a plug where the electrical power would come in; if none, then the unit will draw electrical power through the USB cable.

Mistakenly plugged maxtor one touch 2 into wrong power adapter

Well Most Likely The Circuit Board Burnet Out Since Its 12V And When Plugged Into A 19V Supply It Will Burn Out Instantly Because It Over Charges The Circuits. So Its Not Possible To Repair Such Damage But You Can Take Out The Hard Drive And Plug IT Into A Desktop Computer And Use It At Home Or As An Online Hard Drive To Store Files

Lost power supply

I think you might find this link most useful, from the Seagate Community Forums.

In short, others have had great difficulty buying Maxtor replacement power adapters, however you can buy a generic 12V, 3A DC power supply for $15-20 from a number of sources. Confirm your actual power requirements by referring to the product label on the drive itself.

Hope it helps,
Mike

One hard drive failure mode is a power circuit short. Contact MAXTOR support on their web site for a possible warranty replacement. BTW, SEAGATE owns MAXTOR now.
