Problem for Panasonic PV-7401 VHS VCR

Help! Panasonic VCR PV-7401 tracking?

By Brad - usenet poster

" "
I bought this VCR about one year ago. Don't use it very much but
it worked.  My son in law then used the viedo inputs to hook
to his camcorder to show us his vacation movies. It worked.
He went home.  I then got a movie and it didn't.
Picture is distorted!
I'm convinced it is related to tracking but can't fix it after
much experiments...following the instructions in the manual.
Same results on two Magnovox TV's.
Any help is appreciated!

You may have a dirt clog on one of the heads.    Check out the FAQ's
for cleaning VCR's.  If you are not used to doing this, you should
give it out to a professional.   The head and guides are easily
damaged, and that would be very costly in relation to paying a pro to
do the job.

What kind of distortion? If you are speaking of a distortion or
flagging at the top of the picture or at the bottom, it sounds like the
tape spindles need to be adjusted.
There's an any easy test to perform for this. I recommend first that a
knowledgeable tech perform this. He would take off the top cover. With
the video playing and observing the picture on a tv or monitor, the
tech can use his finger nail and slightly touch the tape as it moves
past the #2 tape spindle and the control/audio head unit.
If the top edge of the tape is touched and the video clears, the
problem is with the adjustment of the #1 tape spindle. If bottom edge
of the tape is touched and the video clears, the #2 tape spindle needs
to be adjusted.

Hope this helps.

I replied to you last night, but I forgot to ask you something very
very simple. You know that statement about assuming and making an ass
out of you and me.

Did your son change the channel on your modulator at the rear of your
vcr when he used it? If he used rca plugs, he wouldn't have had any
reason to touch the modulator, but if he used and adapter with a F1
connector, he might have changed the channel. You know that the channel
on your TV has to match that of your modulator on your vcr, if you are
using the coaxial cables. Also your TV/VCR setting should be correct.

Just a few simple things I noted here. Last night, I was telling you
about the adjustment of the tape spindles.

It could be just as simple as described above.

God Bless
