Question about Whirlpool GHW9100L Front Load Washer

Whirlpool front load model#ghw9100lw2 Sour smell in trao

Need a solution to removing the odor coming from the trap! I beleive I removed what should be the trap and cleaned the black film inside of it. Is there anything else I should do?  smells rotten from time to time...I use VERY little HE detergent, Clorox2 & softner to each load & each load stops at the rinse cycle error with error F02. I cancel once & push start again & usually it finishes the load although since the repairman's been here it does it more often. I also get SUD msg quite often as well. Maybe I need a new pump?

Sour smell in dryer

Hello JoAnn Barrett - It is very rare for a dryer to produce a sour odor. I would suggest cleaning out the lint trap or try removing the panel to confirm that doesn't anything trap there that can cause this odor. Otherwise, I would strongly recommend contacting a professional to move forward accurately with the concern.

I have a sour smell coming from my washer that does not seem to go away, what is the problem? I have seen many other postings on the internet about their having this problem, seems to be the washer.

After the odor has been removed washing habits need to change so it doesn't return. Washing machine odor is caused by

1. Overuse of detergent. Use no more than 1 tbsp of whatever detergent is used (unless washing soiled clothing).
2. Using fabric softener because it's dispensed in the rinse cycle. Dryer sheets or dryer balls are better options. Dryer sheets can also be overused and coat the inside of the dryer with siliconized chemicals that cause clothing to retain odors. Sensors inside the dryer can also be affected. The sheets can be torn in half or thirds
3. Using mainly cold water for washing is fine but makes preventive maintenance important. A hot wash or soak as your last cycle on wash day will help to dissolve residue.
4. Many front loading washer have a filter/trap that will catch debris. A partially clogged filter/trap can cause draining problems and odor. Save money on appliance repair by cleaning it yourself. Consult your owner's manual for instruction.

I have a Whirlpool Duet front loading washer with a smelly trap.

It is normal to have water in the drain lines and drain trap even when the unit is not in use. There's usually about a gallon of residual water in the lower portion of the wash tub, drain line and pump. If you are experiencing sour odors from the washer, the following link can give you some pointers on things to try to help keep the smell from coming back:

Read through the link provided and let me know if you still have problems. I personally own a front loader and have followed this regiment for 9 years now with no odor or mildew problems. I hope this helps you as well.

How do you get smell out of your frontend loader

The following link gives some advice on how you may be able to get rid of those sour or moldy smells coming from your front load washing machine:

Many of these tips are now included as part of the owner/operator manual due to the high number of complaints from consumers. The most persistent cause of foul odors is:

1. Not leaving the door open when the washer is not in use. This allows the tub to air out and keeps any residual water from becoming stagnant. It also prevents mold and mildew from growing in the wash tub.

2. Small items of clothing getting caught in the rubber folds of the door bellow. Socks are notorious for ending up in this area. If they are left there for significant periods of time, they will sour and mildew. Check this area after each wash.

3. Items caught in the trap of the drain pump. Cotton swabs, toothpicks, garment tags, are all common things I have found in the drain pump that can give off foul odors if left for long periods of time.

4. Using the wrong type of detergent. If you use regular detergent it can leave accumulations of soap scum and deposits. This sticky mess can also trap dirt and debris that cause odors. It can also cause premature wear to the drain pumpand seals. Use HE detergent only. Failure to do so will void the warranty on MOST new models.

If the door bellow has alaready begun to mildew or mold, you can remove it by using a non-abrasive scrubbing pad and a 50/50 solution of bleach and water. The green scrub pads you use in the kitchen are considered non-abrasive. DO NOT use steel wool. If the mildew is too bad, you will need to replace the door bellow to get rid of it.

If you need to replace the door bellow the following link explains how:

If you need to check the drain pump for debris, follow this link:

The preventive measures DO work if you get into a routine of following them. I personally own one of these washers and have never had an odor problem in the 9 years I've had it.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I hop you find this information helpful.

Sour clothes smell from washer

Until you can find the filter (I'll investiate!) I suggest running it on hot hottest wash you can (empty) with just bleach. That at least should kill the bacteria that are causing the smell

I have a Whirlpool Gold Ultimate Care II, Commericial Quality, Super Capacity smells. No really it has a terrible odor. It's a sour foul smell. Water and detergent and various clothes washing...

Whirlpool now has cleaning tablets to take the smell out washers. They say they are for HE front load machine but it works on all machines. They are called affresh washer tablets. Just buy some and put all three tablets in the tub with hot water and let the washer go through a cycle with just the tablet(no clothes). By putting all three in the washer at one time it will kill the smell. For later use the package is a three month supply. They cost under 10 dollars.

Sour smell coming from inside whirlpool duet front loader

At the risk of being rude... it's not your washer that is causing the problem it's your washing habits. Jeff is "right on the money" when he stated water temperature is important. It's fine to use mainly cold water but it makes preventive maintenance very important. A hot soak or wash as your last cycle on was day will help dissolve and flush out residue. Just as important is the amount of detergent used and use of fabric softener. To remove odor from your washer and laundry the "splash area" just above the normal waterline must be cleaned. This is invariably the area of heaviest buildup of odor-causing residue. To clean the splash area add 1 or 2 caps of smelly washer cleaner to a full load of laundry and wash in a hot setting. The added bulk of the laundry will raise the water level to include the splash area. Intermittently pause to soak for more extreme cases.
