Inspiron 8100 Won't turn on

Hi all,  I have a Dell inspiron 8100.  256 MB of Ram.  1ghz processor.  The problem is that it won't turn on AT ALL.  I have tried all of the other possible answers online.  Only one worked, but only for a day or two...  The problem is that when i press the power button, the light turns on for about 4 seconds then turns back off.  I have switched the ram in the slots.  (Put each one in the others spot) and it worked for about a day.  Then it started doing the light thing again.  I switched the ram again, and it didnt work this time.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I tried your idea about pulling the battery.  I don't think its at all a memory factor anymore.  When i removed the battery and tried to boot on AC power, there was absolutely no light.  So i would think my power adapter is fried or something.  Possibly a dead motherboard...

When switching the memory, did you try one chip at a time, or have you always had both in the machine? The reason I ask is that if one of the chips is bad or going bad, and you've always had both chips in, then by switching them you fooled the machine temporarily. Also, try removing the battery, and starting on AC only, Dell batteries are notorious for causing a no start when getting worn out. Let me know on these.

O.k Since you've checked the battery and memory, and these aren't it. Then check the power supply with an ohm meter for the proper output. If you're getting the proper output, then it's going to be a problem with the power management system on the motherboard, and, unfortunately, the motherboard will need to be replaced in order to fix the prob.

I get 7 short beeps when I turn it on, and the screen is black. It won't let me do anything to it.

Hi,

It could be dangerous for your laptop or PC because if relates with your processor but this problem could handle normally if this problem seems with RAM. I hope that if you replace your RAM, the problem will be solved but if the problem persist then you will have to replace your processor.

Good Luck

How can I upgrade/improve the capabilities of my Inspiron 1200

The best and quickest improvement is to add more RAM. Add another 512 Mb of RAM. If you already have a 512 Mb of RAM module then add another 512 Mb RAM module. If your laptop has 2X256 Mb RAM modules then you need to remove these and insert 2X512 Mb RAM modules.
The reason why you have 504 Mb RAM is that the video card has grabbed 8Mb of RAM off the main memory.
