There is a tensioner around the engine (it looks like an idler pulley) there will be a 13-15mm bolt that moves the tensioner to the 'slack' position, while you are holding that tenioner slack you need to remove the belt from one of the pulleys ( usually the highet pulley is the easiest) then just reverse the order of the procedure to install the new one.

2002 protage 2.olt hasites under load but clears up after 3000rpm

You are dealing with a misfire. It clears up at 3000.RPM A jump timing belt can do this or a broken valve . Also a failed coil pack. Lets go with a failed coil pack.Because of the strategy that is used a failed on the engine smooth at 2000RPM (neutral) No. 1 and No. 4 are fire simutaneously and No. 2 and No. 3. simutanueously. with the engine running lift the plugwire to number 4 does the engine stumble if it does this is the working cylinder and there is nothing wrong go to number 3 you may have to use number 2 engine running wire pulled out does the engine stumble if there is no change you found the problem.Basically what yopu are doing is checking for spark at all the cylinders

2000 mazda protage belt keeps on shredding

With the belt off, inspect all of the pulleys and rotate them, noticing if any wobble or are cracked/bent. Any misalignment will tear and throw a belt. You can stand at the front1 of the car and eyeball a pulley to see if one across or below it, is out of line.

Lights pulse high and low

Check your battery cables and have someone check your alternator output voltage, it should be 14v when the car is running. Check that the belt to the alternator is not loose.

It looks like you may have 2 serpentine belts, but when one fails it almost always gets tangled into the any other belts and they all end up coming off, all of the problems u listed are driven off your belts, replace the belts and hope that the overheat didn't cause any damage to the engine. And yes you have what are called serpintine belts and there is a tensioner for each..

Another reason you might have alternator going to die. Try to rotate the alternator rotor without belt on it. If you need to use force no free rotation, replace the alternator.
