Question about Vicks Ultrasonic V5100 Humidifier

Thick Cloud of Steam

Yesterday we cleaned our humidifier and put a new filter in it and after about 20 minutes of it being on, it set off our smoke alarm and the whole room was filled with a thick cloud of steam and kind of smelled funny. Our 4.5 month old babies were in the room and inhaled this steam. We plan on throwing out the humidifier and buying a new one, but is this steam harmful to our babies? What would have caused this problem?

Our Vicks ultrasonic humidifiers also filled up each room they were in with so much haze that the smoke detectors were set off only a few minutes after we turned the humidifiers on. This is obviously a defective product. We purchase new humidifiers each year and have never had this problem before.

Exact same problem, after about 20 minutes the smoke alarm goes off and the room is filled with a heavy cloud. I am just looking for a solution, which I do not see. We replaced the filter cartridge and that is when it started. Thanks for any help.

We had the same problem after changing the filter on our humidifier. It had been working fine (without a filter, actually, because we had tossed the old one and had not yet gotten around to replacing it). After putting in the new filter and running the humidifier, the room became hazy and our throats/noses were irritated by the smell in the air.

A brand new V5100 humidifier. The first night we used it without the filter (right under neath the smoke detector) and no problems. The next night with the new filter installed the room filled with fog and set off the smoke detector within 30 min. I should note the humidifier had been moved to the opposite end of the house. I removed the tank and the water in the base was red. I emptied the base and soaked the filter in a pot of water and saw no more red. I then reinstalled the filter and it seems to working correctly now. I am not sure whats up.

I purchased the Vicks Ultrasonic V5100 today, and as soon as I plugged it in, the unit began producing a cool mist. Within about 20 minutes, my entire apartment was filled with a dense haze. The odor associated with the mist and subsequent haze irritates my asthma, which is the opposite effect that was anticipated. This unit is getting returned today!

In response to solution posted above suggesting that steam generated by this humidifier is sterile: it's an ultrasonic humidifer which means that it does not heat water to make steam.

I would say that the beauty of steam is that it has to get through the 100 degree temperature to leave the aqueous state - i.e. to move from a liquid to a gas.

The benefit of that is that any organizums in the water should be killed as a result of that process. Its possible that it smelt musty or old stagnant water smells but to be honest there is little change of harm to the little ones.

Best wishes

Does the vaporizer help fight against smoke and second hand smoke??

No, it only humidifies (puts moisture) in the room air. As a matter of fact. that much humidity, the cigarette smoke may stain the walls and ceiling.

Vicks humidifier

Even though you change the water every time, if it's like ours you will still need to clean it with vinegar about once a week. I have a container that the insert portion (filter or whatever it's called) will sit in and has just enough room to pour in 4 inches of vinegar. Let it sit for about 10 to 20 minutes and then run water through the part where the mist comes out while holding your hand over the bottom. After a few seconds allow it all to run through. Continue and shake it really good and continue on until it is clear. I was AMAZED at what came out the first time I did this and part of the time I used distilled water. Hope this solves the problem.

Hunter Humidifier #33222

From The Hunter Manual
1. Turn the humidifier ‘OFF’ and unplug the unit.
2. Lift the main housing and remove the water dispersion tray and the PermaWick™ Filters. The motor is attached to the main housing. Do not place the motor near water. Do not use a wet towel on the motor or motor housing as electrical shock may occur.
3. The PermaWick™ Filter should be cleaned in a vinegar and water solution to remove any mineral buildup. Place in a solution of one (1) gallon of water and eight (8) ounces of undiluted white vinegar. Allow the filter to soak for 20 minutes.
4. After soaking, rinse it several times with clean water. Place the PermaWick™ Filter in a location where it can drip dry while you clean the other parts of your humidifier.
5. Remove the water tank from the base and empty any water that is left in the tank. Soak the base in a mixture of one (1) gallon of water and eight (8) ounces of vinegar for 20 minutes.
6. After soaking, wipe the base with a soft cloth or sponge to remove any mineral build up. Rinse with clean water several times. If you are planning on storing the humidifier, be sure the base is completely dry.
7. Fill the water tank with one (1) gallon of water and eight ounces of undiluted white vinegar. Replace the tank cap and shake the tank vigorously until all interior surfaces of the tank have been exposed to the water/vinegar mixture.
8. Empty the tank of the water/vinegar mixture. Rinse it several times with clean water and then replace the tank cap. If you are planning on storing the humidifier, dry it inside and out, leaving the cap off to allow the tank to completely dry. Continue to clean the other parts of your humidifier.
9. Remove the water diffuser cap by squeezing the two tabs as shown in Figure 3. Rinse the cap in clean water to remove any debris. If the cap contains hard water residue, soak it in a mixture of one (1) quart of water and two (2) ounces of vinegar for 20 minutes.
Rinse well and reinstall the water diffuser cap. Do not expose motor or other electrical components to water.
10. Wipe the surfaces of the main housing with a soft cloth.
11. Once all the parts are clean, reassemble the humidifier, and follow the USING YOUR HUMIDIFIER to continue use. If you are storing the humidifier, make sure the parts are completely dry, reassemble, and store in a dry location

Vicks caporiser is spitting water instead of steam

Clean the unti - and do not add salt. I live in a major hard water city...and was amazed at how much dirt the tank collected. I tried adding salt to to stop the spitting, which did make a lot more steam, but did NOT stop teh water spit. I also noticed, with salt added, water in tank would only last 4-6 hours, not the 18-24 hours it should. I just figured it out, and now mine works great again, and does not spit. I cleaned the water tank throughly, several rinses, then wiped out entire inside. If you want it to work like new, you have to keep your tank as clean as new. I am going to start filtering my water that I put in with a double pantyhose I made simply so there no more dirt ~ a clean tank will fix the problem, it did mine :)

This is the link to your manual.
Daily Maintenance
1.
Turn switch to OFF position and unplug the cord from wall outlet.
2. Lift the Water Tank from Base. Carefully remove the Water Tray from the base being
careful not to damage the delicate Wicking Filter. Empty excess water from the Water Tray
without removing the Wicking Filter. Remove the Tank Cap and drain any water from the
Water Tank. Rinse the Water Tank with lukewarm water after each use. Wipe accessible
surfaces of the Water Tank and Water Tray clean with a soft, damp cloth.
3. Do not immerse the Base in water. For storage, wipe dry with a soft, clean cloth. Keep
water away from the Air Outlet.
4. Do not leave water in the Water Tank or Water Tray when unit is not in use as it may
result in the build up of mineral deposits and bacteria that can inhibit the output
efficiency of the humidifier. Please note that if water remains in the Water Tank for more
than a day or two, bacterial growth is possible.
5. Replace Water Tray with Wicking Filter. Then replace the Tank. Humidifier is now ready for
use.
Weekly Maintenance
Removing Scale
1.
Remove the Water Tank and empty any remaining water from the Water Tank.
2. Turn switch to the ON position, either low or high speed, and operate Humidifier until the
Wicking Filter is thoroughly dry.
3. Turn switch to the OFF position and unplug the cord from wall outlet.
4. Remove Wicking Filter from the Water Tray by carefully lifting straight up taking care not to
tear filter.
5. Remove the Water Tray from the Base. Fill Water Tray with undiluted white vinegar. Let
stand for 20 minutes.
6. Dampen soft, clean cloth or sponge with undiluted white vinegar and wipe out Water Tray
to remove scale. Do not use soap, detergents or abrasive cleaners.
7. Rinse the Water Tray thoroughly in clean warm water or put in top shelf of dishwasher to
remove scale and vinegar before disinfecting the Water Tray.

Disinfecting the Water Tray and Tank
1.
Fill tank with 1 teaspoon of household bleach in 1 gallon of water. Let stand twenty (20)
minutes, shaking vigorously every few minutes, drain and rinse with clean water until the
bleach smell is gone. Dry with a clean cloth or paper towel.
2. Wipe the Water Tray with a soft cloth dampened in the bleach and water solution. Rinse
the Water Tray thoroughly or place in dishwasher before proceeding.
3. Wipe all exterior surfaces of the Base with a soft, dry cloth. Do not immerse the Base in
