Try opening and taking battery out for 10 mins and then replace and try again. If this does not work - then problem is probably with charger

Turn on and word Garmin appears, then it says loading maps then it shuts down.

It sounds like you have a battery that is going bad. The StreetPilot is one of the older Gamins, and have been known to need new batteries after a few years of use. I would advise upgrading to a newer GPS.

You may have shorted out the battery. Have you tried pluggin the USB cable into the computer? If not, try this. The unit should turn on. If it doesn't, your battery may be damaged.

Garmin streetpilot c550 gps wont power up

Remove silver face plate by prying with your fingernail. Remove 4 screws, open and unplug the connector that the battery and speaker wires connect to. Wait 30 seconds and replug. Problem solved. Put back together and turn on. If this dont work, you have bigger problems.

Remove the front faceplate, (there is an indentation under the word Garmin on the faceplate that you can use to lift it with your finger nail). After removing the faceplate you will see a reset button on the right side. Press the reset and then try to turn the Garmin on.
