Sometimes it starts up as normal, but most of the time the light blinks amber. Is it the mother board, power supply or both?

I have the exact same problem, sometimes the PC used to boot but latel it simply doesn't anymore. The Amber power light keeps flashing, the internal Motherboard light is green indicating it has power, but everything else is dead.

If you want to repair your Dell you can get Dell motherboards from here at reasonable prices:

I have bought a lot of Dell motherboards from here and never had a problem.
They list a mobo for your machine but the price is a bit salty at $149.99

No power on dell e520 dimension

On the 20 pin connector, short the green wire to any black wire with a paperclip. This will force the power supply to turn on manually if the motherboard is not giving the correct "ON" signal.

Dell Dimension 2400 with steady amber power light and diagnostic lights of ABC green and D off. What could be the problem?

Steady amber power LED is indicative of a problem with the motherboard. Remove all external connections except power, remove all PCI Cards, ram, disconnect power from all drives, turn on see if power LED is still steady amber. If it is, more than likely the motherboard has a failure. Also check to see if the CPU heatsink is firmly seated (The plastic retainer has been known to fail causing the CPU to overheat)

I have a Dell Dimension 9200. Having a problem with power to PC. The power supply unit is working fine. The power switch seems to be ok, but the machine will not power up. Do you have any suggestions

Please check on the power button if the Led is steady amber it requires motherboard replacement. If the light is steady green check the cables in the system that they are connected properly.

Can't boot up Dell 5100 Dimension, amber light flashes

When you mean the amber light, is that the blinking hard drive access light or the power light? Different cases have different colors on it. Mine has blue and green lights.

If you see the boot screen (bios) and then after it goes to boot, does it blink and hang?

This could be a simple operating system issue, hard drive or hardware/motherboard issue. If you could provide more information, that would help.

Windows XP won't start

The amber light is the error light on a Dell. It can mean a few things. 1. RAM has went bad, not properly seated. 2. Video card has went bad or come unseated. 3. Power supply is not working properly; or 4. Motherboard has went bad. Hope this helps & please remember to rate my answer.

Woes with Dell

If the power light is steady amber, a device might be malfunctioning or incorrectly installed.

Disconect fan , see if it starts.
