Question about PC Desktops

I have no connection to the internet.The dsl light is flashing,i have checked all connections and changed the micro-filter.I am connected at the moment via another router.

It's your router. If you got it from your local phone company then contact them and let them know that you need a new router or they can send a tech out who will then check and if need be will put in new values for incoming. You can also check your local electronics store about purchasing your own router for DSL.

Please check your internet connection and make sure your internet is not intermittent. monitor the dsl light on your modem and you should see SOLID green all the time. once it flashes green or flashes red that means you have intermittent connection

Troubleshooting DSL Modems


Ever look at your DSL Modem and wonder what all those lights mean? Why do some flash, while others remain solid? What if your lights are different colors? How do you tell if your DSL Modem is working correctly?<br /> <br /> Each light on your DSL Modem represents a function. The light is an indication of whether that function is working properly. Sometimes the placement and title of each function can vary by modem manufacturer, but they are pretty standard in interpetation. If you look closely your modem, you might find that each function is labeled in small print to help identify them.<br /> <br /> A standard DSL Modem has a light for power, internet, ethernet, link and wireless connection. A healthy DSL Modem will have a steady green light that does not blink or flutter for all features other than internet, ethernet and wireless. A flashing or fluttering light indicates movement and useage. When you are connected to your DSL Modem wireless, the light for this feature will blink indicating a connection and/or active useage. If the internet connection is working properly the color of the light will be green. If the connection is working but experincing a problem the light can turn to yellow or orange. If the connection fails, the light on the DSL Modem can be red or absent depending on the problem causing the trouble. If your service is turned off by the provider, more than likely the light will be "off".<br /> <br /> If your lights turn a different color, are absent or your internet connection fails try power cycling your modem before reporting the trouble to your provider. Power cycling helps the DSL Modem to reset its connection and repair your internet services.<br /> <br /> If you are using a DSL Modem alone to connect to the internet (no additional router) you can power cycle it by first turning off your computer and then unplug the modem itself from the power source at the wall. Wait for 1 to 2 minutes and then plug it back into the power source and wait for the warm up to finish before rebooting the pc.<br /> <br /> The DSL Modem should go through the normal warm up procedures of blinking lights, making them all stable and solid green ect. You will know when its finished warming up when the features are set at solid green (other than eithernet, internet and wireless connection as explained above). When the modem finished the warm up, reboot your computer and check your internet connection.<br /> <br /> Power cycling your DSL Modem can help keep your connection healthy and running at optimal speeds.<br />

<p>The type of Internet connection you use is the most important factor in determining your connection speed. The three most common ways to connect to the Internet from home are dial-up, DSL, and cable. If you have a choice, cable is usually the fastest, but both DSL and cable are faster than dial-up. <br /> <p>Many Internet providers also offer Fiber Optic Service (FiOS), which connects to the Internet using light over an optical network. In your home, you still connect your computer through copper wiring. The advantage of FiOS is that it can provide higher speeds than traditional copper wire connections such as DSL or cable. Some Internet providers offer multiple options, depending on the area you are in. More populated areas are more likely to have FiOS available. Check with your phone company or Internet provider for more information.<br /> <p>If you use a dial-up connection, there are a couple of good ways to optimize your Internet speed. First, use the fastest modem you can. The fastest modem you can use will send and receive information at a rate of 56 kilobits per second (Kbps). You won't get a full 56 Kbps speed most of the time, but with a good phone line, you should approach at least 45-50 Kbps. <br /> <p>Second, make sure that your phone line is in good condition. If the telephone wiring in your home or business is old or deteriorating, you might be picking up stray signals or cross talk from other phone lines. These problems will slow your Internet connection because the modem will have to send the same information over and over until it's transmitted without interruption. Check your telephone wires to be sure they aren't damaged, frayed, or twisted around power or other telephone cables. I have the same problem. The Sync DSL light keeps on flashing. According to the 3Com and Singtel, they both blame one another. From my understanding, the modem is not receiving and internet signal at all....


Yes, when the sync light flashes it meand there is no sync to the DSLAM located at the exchange. This is usually down to either bad wiring (too much line noise) or the provider not having set the line up.

Have you tried connecting the router to the master socket in the house with no other equipment connected - phones faxes modems etc? they can cause problems sometimes.

While I'me on the internet (adsl), and I receive a call, the internet connection is lost. It takes a few attempts to re-connect it after.


your dsl provide you with filters and these filters must be install on all the phone jacks then the phone connects to that and there is one that has two opens in the filter this one has to be with the modem installe the same way except the phone goes to the phone side and the modem has (assuming your not using comcast that is totally different setup) there is no filter for comcast...

if all filters are installed properly then check the phone and the line that connects them sometimes a phone has 4 pins in them and the regular phone line has 2 pins in the center make sure you are using a 2 oin phone line after you check the phone base to see which one it requires (for comcast this could be your problem)

I lost the instructions on how to install a Linksys wireless router. I would like to down load these instructions.


cable setup

This guide is recommended for Cable Internet Service in the USA like Charter, Cox, Comcast, Cable Vision, etc.
  1. First you need to connect the device together. You need to connect your cable modem to the internet port on the back of the router, and the computer should go to one of the 4-port on the router labeled Ethernet (1, 2, 3, 4).
  2. Then turn on the modem first, wait for the lights to stabilize before powering on the Linksys router. Lights that you should have on the router are Power (solid green), Wireless/WLAN (Green sometimes flashing), One of the no. lights where the computer is plugged in (flashing), And the internet light (flashing).
After doing this step there are times that this will already get you online. If the internet will not work, you continue following the steps 3.

3. If the internet is still not working; we will need to adjust a setting on the router setup page. To access the setup page of the router you need to open your internet explorer or Firefox on the computer that is hardwired directly to the router. In the address bar of your browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox) type http://192.168.1.1/ and hit enter or click Go. It will ask you for a username and password. Just type "admin" for the password field and there is no username. If you have ran the setup CD prior to this, then use the password that you have set when were running the setup CD.
4. Once you are in the setup page of your router make sure that the Internet Connection Type is set to Automatic Configuration DHCP, then click the save the settings button at the bottom of the page. After saving the settings, click the sub tab at the very top of the page that says MAC Address Clone. Set it to enable and click the button that will say Clone or Clone your PC's MAC and save the settings again.

5. After doing step 4, do a power cycle. Power cycle is done by turning of the router, modem and computer. Leave them off for a minute, tuned them back on in this order. Modem first wait for the lights to stabilize, then the router wait until the power light become solid. Then turn on the computer. This will get you online through the router.


DSL

Configuring the Linksys Router.
These instructions assume the computers TCP/IP Properties are configured to " Obtain an IP Address Automatically"
1. Connect the Linksys power supply and connect a Lan port to the computers Lan port.
2. Go to your desktop and double click on Internet Explorer (Located on the Start Menu in Windows XP)
3. When "Internet Explorer" opens type »192.168.1.1[?] into the "Address" bar and click on Go
4. The "Enter Network Password" window will appear.
5. Skip user name and type admin (admin is the default password) as the password, and click OK
6. Scroll down on this page and look for (on older firmware) PPPoE or select the option for PPPoE under "WAN Connection type"
7. Username: yahootheclown@sbcglobal.net or yahootheclown@ameritech.net and your password.
8. Select the option for "Keep Alive" with a redial period of 180
9. Click on the Apply button.
10. Then click on the Continue button
11. Exit Internet Explorer

Power Cycling:
1. Shut down your computer
2. Unplug the power from the router
3. Unplug the power from the DSL modem
4. Wait for 30 seconds and re apply power to the DSL modem
5. Once the lights on the DSL modem stop blinking power up the router
6. Start up your PC

Checking your internet Connection:
1. Go to your desktop and double click on Internet Explorer (Located on the Start Menu in Windows XP)
2. When "Internet Explorer" opens type »192.168.1.1/Status.htm[?] into the "Address" bar and press the "enter" key or left click the "go" button
3. The "Enter Network Password" window will appear.
4. Skip user name and type admin (admin is the default password) as the password, and click OK
5. On the left of the "Status" page you will see "PPPoE Enabled", and to the right you will see the Status of the connection. It can be one of the following:
- Disconnected
- Connecting
- Connected
6. If the status is "Connected" you should be able to browse the web, if not reboot your computer
7. If you get an error message please repeat the "Configuring the router" and "Power Cycling" steps with a different username.
- If all four connections fail then please see our knowledge base articles on the error you're getting.
Once the router is configured correctly you should change the default password and record it for reference.
You should also add the "Enter Network Password" page to the Favorites List, and review the user manual.

Lose internet connection after start up


What type of service do you have dial up or dsl? if you have dsl, you might check the that your ethernet cord is tightly connect ( the yellow one coming into the modem). When your internet is on, check your speed. You can do this by clicking on the little internet icon on the lower right. When you are unable to get on the internet have you used the dianostic utility on the page that says you can not get on? You should try that as well. If you are on DSL do the lights on your modem stay on or go out? Which ones?

Lost internet connection. I use BT Voyager 190 ADSL modem on AOL with WIndows Vista. Power and Thernet indicator lights are on solid, but DSL and Internet indicators are off.


Sounds like there is a issue with your phone line. The DSL indicator is the phone line. Check to see if you have a dial tone or if a message is on the phone you haven't listen too, if you have message service. Try unplugging all phone connections as and replug them in again. You also might need a filter for your DSL to phone line. Also if you have an alarm that is monitoring your system, you need to by pass alarm and use a filter.

Network Connection


First off, the 1394 connection is a firewire connetion. Firewire is a less popular and slower alternative to USB 2.0 connections. Disregard that in respect to your internet connection. Now in regards to your desktop internet connection.... -Go to the control panel, select network connections, then local area connection. -Right click and select properties -Under the general tab scroll down to Internet protocal (tcp/ip) Make sure the settings are set to automatically obtain an IP address. If they are and still are not working you can try to manually assign an IP address yourself. The laptops ip address might be something like 192.168.1.2 so whatever your laptop ip address is make the desktop 1 number higher in the last field (192.168.1.3 for example). Don't change any numbers other than the last field. You can find out the other information like subnet mask and default gateway by using the laptop. On the laptop go to the start menu, hit run. Then type in cmd, this will bring up a dos prompt. Then finally type IPCONFIG . Listed will be the laptops active internet connections and it's IP addresses. Copy over the subnet mask IP address and the default gateway address into the desktop and like in the previous step just manually assign the desktop a different IP address 1 number higher than the laptop. If the dns server's address isn't listed on the laptop a quick call to your dsl provider will solve that question.
