Sylvania SA110 15 Amp Heavy Duty Appliance Timer Logo
Posted on Apr 16, 2011

I bought the heavy duty appliance timer SA110, 15 amps for my hotwater solar heater. I followed the instuctions and the timer never worked. I bought this timer for the pump the pumps the water from the heater to the solar panel to only work during the day (on at 8am) and to shut off in the evening (off at 6pm) to conserve electric. I did this because there is no reason for the pump to be running when the sun is not out. I used to just unplug it at night, but would always forget to replug before leaving to work the next day. A friend talked me into buying this timer. Now I come home from work to cold water. What am I doing wrong? Is this timer not made for hotwater heaters? The pump plugs into a regular wall socket. Timer pins are up at night, down for daytime, switch is turned to timer. What am I doing wrong? Thank you very much for your time, Aloha, Lori

It sounds like you have the timer set correctly.
Manual says to set Master switch to ON position to make settings
Timer has lifetime warranty

Open following link to identify timer and download manual:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Sylvania-timers-and-manuals.html

This timer is rated 120Volt 1800W incandescent 1/2 HP
If your pump rating plate shows excess of 1/2 HP, then this timer is not heavy enough.
Timer comes with lifetime warranty against workmanship, which is far superior than any other timer I've seen on the market, and I test and research timers each day.

Manual says to set Master switch to ON position to make settings.
After settings are made, manual says to move Master switch to Timer for timed functions, as you have done

Next thing to look for: if timer dial rotates as time passes, and keeps correct time.

The timer dial is a clock. The segments located around dial are pushed down or pushed up to control on-off operation.
As the dial rotates, the segments push a switch that turns Load on-off.
If you want timer ON for 2 hours, then you push down 8 consecutive segments.
If you want timer ON for 8 hours, then you push down 32 consecutive segments.

Plug ordinary lamp into timer, and turn lamp ON, and then manually rotate timer dial to see if lamp turns on-off. This will give you a baseline for timer operation, and then you can assess if the motor has suddenly malfunctioned, or breaker is tripped, etc.

Intermatic makes a heavy-duty plug-in timer, and the ratings are identical to your Sylvania SA110

I purchased a 1875 watts Timex Heavy Duty timer Model # 12-881 to connect to my 1200 watt water distiller. The timer is burned and has melted where the distiller was plugged in. We were furtunate...

Timex 12-881 timer has 3-prong outlet and is rated 15amp 1875 watts.

The timer melted because too much amperage was drawn across the connection and timer got hot.
Different things can cause this.
Phony rating, and/or mis-manufactured timer.
Defective timer.
If distiller has a motor, then it will draw more amps at start-up.
Timer is rated for incandescent light bulbs only.
Many timers say 1875 watts resistive, but instruction sheet will show 1000Watts incandescent and 1/4 HP horsepower.
Timer is plugged into extension cord.
Cheaply built product, not meant for constant use.
Timer outlet and distiller plug did not meet firmly, so connection heated up.
Turn off distiller before plugging into outlet so no spark is at the connection point.

I recommend appliance timer for operating appliances.
For example Intermatic HB 113 timer.

I bought timer model #402A. It says 1250 watts tungsten rated. Here is my question: I have a demhumifier that draws 1800 watts-can I use the timer and what does 1250watts tungsten mean? Thank you.

1250 watt tungsten: Tungsten is the tungsten filament in light bulb.
So 402A timer is rated for light bulb only and not dehumidifier motor load.
1800 watt dehumidifier will burn 402A timer, and could start a fire.
I suggest Intermatic heavy-duty appliance timer HB113C:

Had to change battery. Since I did this the day will scroll several times and will not let me set the day, nor the time, nor the mode. Is my unit toast ?? As it was working till I changed the battery.

Most digital timers suggest resetting as last-step effort to restore functionality.
This particular timer is reset by removing battery.
Try removing battery again. Otherwise it seems the timer has gone bad.
HB88RC is discontinued product.
Replacement is heavy-duty Intermatic HB800RCL 2-outlet or HB800RCH 1-outlet timer.

I do not have an instruction manual for the Intermatic E1400WC timer switch and I can't figure out how to program the on/off times.

Intermatic makes heavy duty Ei400 series 1HP 120V or 240V countdown timer that can be wired for single-pole and 3-way.
Open following link to identify Ei400 timer and download manual:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Countdown-timer-horsepower-ratings.html#Ei

Coundownt timers are used to control fans and lights that need to run certain length of time, and then turn off. For example bathroom fan or whole house attic fan

I bought a westek daily timer for a space heater. The issue is that it powers on at the desired time but does not then start to operate and heat- the equivalent of when you plug it in only. I want it to...

Your question is a bit hard to understand.
You have a plug-in timer.
It's connected to a space heater.
The timer powers ON correctly.
But for some reason the heater does not turn ON?

I think you should check the wattage of your space heater and compare it to the wattage of your timer.
A lot of plug-in timers are pushed to the limit at 1000Watts
Your space heater is 1200W or 1500Watts probably.

Buy an appliance timer to handle the space heater load.
Intermatic HB113C timer handles 2000Watts
It will be safe.
Set two on-off functions per day
