Question about Routers

Router Connectivity My D-Link DI-514 router worked fine unitl I installed a new DSL modem (Motorola 2210). I can connect to internet fine when the computer is connect directly through the modem; however, when I connect everything through router as it was prior, I'm not able to connect to internet or wirelessly. I've tried all of the disconnected/reconnecting, waiting X number of minutes and rebooting the computer...nothing seems to work. I can see my wireless network on the my laptop; however, it still does not bring me to the internet when I connect to it. What can you suggest? Thanks in advance. James

It will be one of two things or both - either your computer is not setup for DHCP or your router is using the same IP address as your ISP or both.

To check ISP IP address connect your computer to your modem then: from start => run => CMD (hit enter after this)
a command window opens, type "ipconfig /all" without the quotes.
The line with "IP address" gives you your ISP IP addr.
Compare this with what you get from your router manual if they are the same then do the following:

To configure your computer to use a DHCP IP address, go to the Control panel => network connections => Properties (right click on your default connection) => double click Internet protocol (From general tab) => (a new window pops up) from the general tab ensure that "obtain an IP address automatically" is selected.

To change the IP address of your router check your manual and do the following:
IP Addr => 10.10.1.1
Sub net mask => 255.255.0.0
Default gateway => IP address from your ISP
Make sure to the router is set to act as a DHCP server.

You should be up and running.

I don't know how to connect my router. please help

If you have DSL or cable internet, disconnect the ethernet cable going from the DSL or cable internet modem to the computer. Disconnect the end of that cable that plugs into the modem. Connect an ethernet cable from your cable or DSL modem to the router where it says something like "modem", "internet", or "in". If the router is a wired router, connect the ethernet cable that is still attached to the computer to any open ethernet port on the router.

Try this:

Connect the modem to the router, and the router to the computer.

Pull the power cord out of the Modem.

Pull the power cord out of the Router.

Wait 10 seconds.

Plug in the modem, and wait untill all the lights go steady (ususally a minute or two)

Plug in the router.

Check your connection. Ask for more help if this doesn't work.

Short connection and then no connection

This is a problem with the firmware of the router, so the best way to resolve this is to flash or update the firmware of this router then after that reset the router by pressing the reset button for about 15 seconds so the firmware update will take effect....

AT&T FastAccess DSL & D-Link not working for me

Yes D-link is compatible with DSL. What you need to do is call your ISP and have them bridge your DSL modem. Next you need to verify your username and password for your internet account. Next call d-link and have them help you change your router's setting to work with PPPoE connections.

these are router configuration items from the WAN button on the Home tab.

Does your DSL connection require a PPPoE login?

IF so check to see of auto-reconnect is enabled?

If not Enable auto-reconnect.

Connecting 2 computer thru DI-514

Well I believe wat ya need to do is simply obtain a NEW "Account" with NEW Logon & Password with a NEW Internet Service Provider. Then you set up the modem to connect to the new ISP, at the NEW ISP's address, with the NEW Password & Logon. When you got the modem ya should have got a "Setup" CD that should walk ya thru the connection routine... Below is a link for a "Users Manual" that should help you get connected. ftp://ftp.dlink.de/di/di-514/documentation/DI-514_qig_en_Quick-Install.pdf
