Question about Nikon D40x Digital Camera

Won't turn on

Hi, my D40 will not turn on. At first I thought the battery was dead. However after charging it, there is still no power when I switch the camera on. Does anyone have an idea of what could be causing this?

Assuming you don't have another compatible Nikon to test your battery on, and depending on how old the battery is, you can try cleaning the battery contacts.

Take a pencil eraser and rub the battery contacts and observe if there is any change in coloration, if the contacts do change color than this is likely working and continue to do so until your arm is tired or your satisfied. Just a few eraser rubs is necessary to remove most inhibiting tarnishing.

Copper and other battery contacts can tarnish over time and this reduces conductivity, this is a common problem with portable batteries and more often seen in cellular batteries since they are inexpensive compared to laptop and high end camera batteries whose contacts are typically treated / coated to protect against tarnishing.

If that fails, then you should visit a camera dealer and see if your battery works in one of their demo bodies, there isn't a risk it will damage their camera and if they're afraid or reluctant to test your battery then find a different store since they're obviously idiots at the place who just snubbed you. A camera dealer should be interested in testing your battery since it could mean an opportunity to sell you a replacement battery.

Ensure you take your camera body with you so they can also take a known working battery and test your camera body for issues.

If you need a new battery they can be had for reasonable prices of ~$30 USD on Amazon and numerous other places.

I would discourage you from using anything but a Nikon battery because the quality control is inconsistent and it could start a fire or oversurge your body and cause permanent damage.

Have a john deere sabre turn key won't start thought battery was dead charged battery still won't start jump start with car battery it will start then . try to engage reverse with blades running it...

Some mowers have a mowing reverse safety switch. That safety will kill the mower if you try to reverse with the deck engaged. Some mowers even have an override button that has to be held while backing up. As for the battery thing, no matter how much you charge a bad battery you will not get it to start a mower if it has a bad cell or two. I would use a multimeter to check battery voltage, but the end result would still be the same, replace the battery.

I hope this gets you going again.

I connected my d40 to the computer via USB and left it on. now it is not switching on. battery was at 2 bars.

Hi,

have you tried recharging/replacing the battery?

Remove the battery & completely disconnect the camera from any cables. Now charge/replace the battery & try switching it on again. If it still fails to turn on & you have fully charged the battery then you should take it to a Camera shop for them to test. Alternatively, purchase a new battery to use in the camera.

Hope this helps

My nikon D40 says my battery is dead

For the price of a battery, I would replace it. There are plenty of good quality chipped aftermarket batteries for the D40 for only a few dollars.
