how do i get my footage off of my camera and onto my computer

  • JusJoshin Aug 28, 2008

I have set the dcr-dvd101 to "USB mode" and plugged it into my computer
via the USB port. At this point I have tried opening both Windows
moviemaker and ImageMixer 1.5. When I select "capture video" in both
programs I am told the device cannot be detected. When I attempt to
import video I am told that the format is unrecognizable or corrupt.
Please help me. I need to edit video from my Sony handycam.

if you finalize the disc then you can view it on movie maker but there is no editing fascilities and imagemaker 1.5 is a waste if time. ANybody know of any better software for even just the slightest bit of editing capability. thx

Windows Movie Maker should be easy enough to use. It comes standard on a windows xp/vista machine.

How can I download video from a sony mini_dv camcorder to my laptop which does not have a firewire connection?

IEEE 1394 or firewire is the only reliable method.
If you just want to get the footage to a computer for playback only then:
There are USB converters on the market.
Most covert the files to non-editable codecs so if you wish to edit the footage:
You could transcode those file back to DV but this is a bad workflow.Having a computer with a firewire port and appropriate editing software is your best option.

Hi I have a quick question. after I have been downloading my pictures from my camera to computer, I am not able to edit them or download them onto any websites. is this an error w/my camera or computer?

You did not state which computer or software you are using to edit your video, bu the general consensus is the raw footage has to be "unwrapped" from its compressed form (video gets compressed to fit on SD card) so that it can be editable with your software. Otherwise, editing the footage will be difficult. I use a Mac and FCP. My workflow is - after moving the files from my SD Card to my ext. hard drive, I batch load them into MPEG Streamclip (free software for PC and Mac). Then I choose Apple ProRes 422 (LT) to transcode my raw footage. After waiting for the process to finish (minutes to hours, depending on how many files you batch load), I import my files into FCP and everything works great. No more issues. Also, if you are working on a Mac, iMovie will accept your Rebel.mov files without issue. iMovie unwraps the footage with the Apple Intermediate Codec automatically and editing in iMovie is so simple that it makes me want to smack myself for not trying it sooner after editing on FCP for the last 10 years.......

Hi, I am having great difficulty capturing video, frames are dropping continually plus there is no footage display on the monitor window. Footage allready within the program plays back OK. Any help that...

Hello bazmaz
You need a very powerfull computer to capture and edit video , at least a Pentium 4 at 3GHz , 2 GB RAM . You will still probably loose frames in High Quality mode , meaning a recent Intel 7 series will give the best results .
I have myself experienced that the best results are obtained with a stand alone DVD recorder , preferably with a HD included . This is really the best way .

How can I transfer my 8mm tape to my computer? I need to have the film on a flash drive or dvd.

Assuming that you want to do your video work later (editing,DVD burning)in your PC.

1.Your PC must have video capture device(either built-in or add-on).
2.Properly set your video editing software to able to capture video form your device.
3.Connect your camera to your PC in regular manner, like when you connect it to your TV.
4.Have your camera in PLAYBACK mode.wind the tape to the beginning of the footage you want to capture.
5.Open your editing software.turn on capture mode.
6.Start capture. At the same time, start playing back the footage on the cam.
7.When all footage were captured, click stop capture.
8.Start your editing work.
9.when complete, save it to some uncompressed video format like *.avi for later burning to DVD or converting to other format.

For beginners,I recommend Windows Movie Maker video editing software that should come bundled in almost every computer. It's fast, simple but effective enough for home-movie work.Once your project is completed, save your movie in original .avi format for later burning to DVD,etc.

BTW forget the old-school Linear Editing (on the tape) thing. It's slow, complicate and much less flexible than Non-Linear method.

How Do I Edit the Film?

Look for the output jacks on your camera, hook them to your computer's audio/video input. Try accessing the recording utility on the computer then upload footage through NTSC format. You can then edit the footage. If your camera and computer utilize S-video, use them for best resolution

Transfer footage from DVD to Computer for editing

I use ISO Buster to read the AVCHD footage into my computer and then edit with Pinnacle Studio. With ISO Buster, you place the 3" AVCHD DVD into your regular DVD Rom drive on your computer and it will rip the raw files directly from the disk. You cannot transfer the movies from the DX1 to Pinnacle or any other editor using the USB cable.

I am trying to find a way to transfer my video from samsung digital cam. sc-dc164 to my computer so i can edit and make dvds. .

Make sure you have a firewire port on your computer. If not, go out and buy a firewire card. Then purchase a firewire cord. plug your camera into the firewire port using the firewire cord, boot up your video editing software (I use Adobe Premiere, personally. Final Cut Pro is the best to use if you're running a Mac), and capture your footage. Edit your footage if you'd like and all that stuff, and then export the video to your desktop. You'll then have the same quality of what you shot in one file.
