Well, in my opinion all burners are the same, don't worry too much about the brand or model of the product since the life of the burner is the "reader/burner laser" make sure the lifespan of the burner is long, some of them have up to 400000 hours of useful life, most burners have the lifespan time in the manual, some printed on the box, I recomend to try to get the sweet spot between lifespan and price. Make sure you have a good burning software like nero.
Hope my solution helps.
Have a nice day :)

what sort of burning software are you using it might be because you have not removed any copywrights

DVDBackup is intended to let you exercise your "fair use" rights under copyright law to either "time-shift" or "space-shift" DVD content which you may have purchased legitimately.
An example of time-shifting would be to temporarily store the data from a DVD you rented so as to watch it at a later time after you have returned the disc (and avoided late fees!). An example of space-shifting would be to copy one or more DVD discs to your laptop hard drive so as to watch them while on a long airplane flight. Another way that you could use DVDBackup would be to modify or excerpt sections of the DVD video and audio to create your own movies.

How to burn dvd and cds?

If you are using windows xp pro or windows 7, you should be able to just copy the files directly to your DVD drive under My Computer (or Computer) with a blank disk in the drive. When you are ready to burn them to the disk, right-click on the drive and choose the option to Burn to Disc.

Otherwise I also use a free option called CDBurnerXP which does a very good job.

Will not read disks

Is this an older drive? Possible that the drive is dying. I had this happen to me once. I ended up buying a new cd/dvd burner. The laser works different when reading verse burning, so it is possible that it is dead, but still working just enough to burn.

What BRANDS are compatable w/ HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-T21N?

I hate to say it but memorex are the worst quality, the reason is that the drive's laser will try to adjust its power upward to burn the disk-optimum power calibration(OPC).Some burner programs display this . I have tried over 8 packets of different memorex media and results are poor ,one in five are coasters .I suspect memorex media will destroy drive lasers as running laser at top power isn't good for its life .I hate to recomend brands but tayo uden, verbatim and sony are good media but not as cheap as memorex but more cost effective!

1) Do not pay attention to speed burning, in my opinion the slower the better.

2) the burner may be dusty, buy a dry dvd lens cleaner and use it.

3) try other media like Verbatiom or Teac and compare results.

4) the lifespan of any burner (depends on use) is about 18 months (my nec 7170-AD stopped working after 10 months), you may have exeded the life span of your burner, replace with new one.
