Check BIOS menu - if it is not visible in BIOS menu for hard disk then check cables are not loose.
Otherwise try a new a hard disk.

A least the device is not bad? Try downloading the drive files again. Go to devices and select remove or delete then restart the computer it will seek out the device again and download the drivers from Windows Update or the drivers disc that came with your computer. Or go to the manufacturers web page and download the drives there. John

I don't know if this is the solution you're looking for but if it's less than a year old I would say call sony and get a replacement drive. They may even be required to have a year hardware warranty (but don't quote me on that). That would actually be much faster/easier than searching the internet for a firmware fix that may or may not exist or help at all.

Motherboard upgrade - Sony Vaio VGC-RB62G - RAID 0 issue

Why don't you try to get your main drive running before getting into Raid Configurations. Set your single drive to Master and run setup telling it you have one drive. Once you are satisfied that it is not some other fluky error, put in the other drive and I believe if SATA you don't even have to worry about Master Slave. Go about your boot and go into setup again. Hopefully all is good with the world and all that has to be done is fix up BIOS. No matter what, there is never an " out of the box " clean system. Make sure you plug your cables in correctly. I assume you're running EIDE. You'll get it.

There should be a very small hole on the front of the dvd plate. Push a small paper clip straight in. This should release the drive.

Sony VGC RB53 wont recognize blank writeable cd/dvd's

Insert a blank CD, try to burn something on to the disk, if that is successfully done than the CD drive is fine, unless you have a problem. Sometimes blank discs don't show up with direct click.
