Flow/procedure for person cant access interner via a router
first, make sure you have DSL to the premise (is the sync light green is a good indicator, but you still might have no ATM ping)
anyway, then you see if your computer can see the router
click start, run, type cmd and click ok
in the black box that pops up, type ipconfig
you should have an ip address, subnet mask and default gateway
if they are blank, then you have to click start, control panel, and network connections, if you see pick a task, hit network connections again, otherwise, you are looking at your LAN's
if the network connections is blank, then the nic drivers arent installed
if you see your lan, and theres more than 1, unplug your cable from the router to see which one gets a red X on it, this is the one you want to right click on, and make sure it says 'disable', taht means its ENABLED
then click properties at the bottom, in the window where its talking about client for microsoft windows, double click the bottom line that says internet protocols, TCP/IP, and make sure its set to obtain an ip address automatically, the DNS should be set to obtain automatically also.
If you are pinging your routers default gateway, like on a linksys its 192.168.1.1, and you're getting replys, that means your computer sees the router. Open internet explorer, and type that number in the address bar where you would normall type www watever, and do not type www, just the number and hit enter on your keyboard.
if you dont get a window asking you for the userID and password, then your firewall may be blocking you. turn the computer off, and when a nd while you turning it back on, click and tap the F8 button on the top of your key board until you get an advance screen. Pick safemode with networking. when it says your running in safemode, click ya. sign in with your normal acct, doesnt have to be the admin one. open ie and now see if you can get into the router by typing 192.168.1.254. If you still cant, click start, run, type cmd and click ok, in the black window, type netsh winsock reset. This will reset the winsock catelog, you have to restart the machine like its saying, and come up in safemode again by tapping the F8 key, see if you can open internet exploere and type 192.168.1.254 and get in now. if not, do you have zone alarm on? Do you have norton corporate edition, i have seen both of those programs block people from getting into their router. You can also try resetting the router. make sure to hold the reset button for at least 30 seconds, now try to get into it.
If all that fails, you probably need to swap out the router.
