Question about Philips 42PF9630A 42 in. Plasma Television

Resetting philips 42pf9730a/37 remote

The only thing that works is the volume. this has happened before and we just reset it but the instructions to do that are really hard to find! theres 2 buttons that need to be pushed, but i cant remember which ones.
My Philips 42in. LCD/Plasma HDTV has picture loss and is only a little over a year old. We first noticed that the sound would go out but, when turning the cable reciever and tv off and on the sound would come back on so we figured it was the cable reciever. Now recently the picture has failed and you can hear the sound. The menu isn't even visible. I spoke with a customer service rep with Philips and they are not sure but say it could be the power assembly making the picture fail. Could this be some software or firmware that needs to be loaded or will I have to have the power assembly replaced?

There is a firmware that can be updated via usb from philips. This fw was used to correct the tv powering on with no picture randomly (they called it a maintence session) but it was a problem. The tv would power on on its own and do this..

But... This will not resolve your problem if the set doesnt work when normally powered on. I know this first hand as I dealt with philips under warranty on this exact same set not too long ago.

The problem is with the main control board and y sus board. If the set is not under warranty, good luck finding the parts as they are $$$$$.

They replaced mine as they couldnt find the boards needed, I waited a month and said enough was enough.

But there is no simple fix for this one. Combination of 2 problems.

Resetting the TV
If the buttons on the remote AND the buttons on the TV case do not work (channels do not change and you cannot open or navigate the menu), the TV has stopped responding. Reset the TV as follows:

NOTE:
Some TVs have a reset button. If available and accessible, try using the reset buttons before using the steps below. Using the reset buttons can save time.

1. Unplug the TV power cord from the power outlet.
2. Unplug any connected devices (DVD, Set-top boxes, etc...)
3. Press and hold the TV power button for five seconds.
4. Plug the TV power cord back into the power outlet and turn on the TV.
5. Open the on-screen menu to confirm that the TV is responding again.
6. Turn off the TV and reconnect the devices.
7. Turn on the TV.

hope this may help;

Hello

I have actually seen this before. The tv in my living room did it and it was a simple fix. I had to download the latest software. Put it on a usb key. Turn the tv off... Stick the key in and load the new software.

The only TRICK was that I had to hold down the VOLUME - button on the tv itself while my wife worked the remote.

So, if you can hold down your VOLUME - button and do things to your tv I would think this might work for you too. I know it sounds strange that a software upgrade can fix this, but it did for me.

Hope this helps

Vizio 37 inch channels and volume changing on its own

The circuit or integrated circuit being controlled has likely failed. You might try 'resetting' it by pulling the AC plug overnight. If that has no effect, a repair is unavoidable. This model seems to be developing a number of different problems.

Cannot control TV with remote after DTV change

Cool. It's good that you fixed your problem.
Just in case that it happens again, your TV come with a "RESET" and "SYSTEM RESET" button on the back of the TV. 90% of the time, the SYSTEM RESET button will solve the problem.

Most of the problems with the Philps 42" plasma (other than fuses) can be fixed with a firmware update.
If you have a PC and internet connection you can download the firmware and tranferit to a 1 gig USB memory stick. turn off the TV insert the Memory st, turn on the TV and it automatically recognises the stick will go into upodate mode with on screen instructions for the user.
They have had problems in the past with HDMI and volume, HD pixel problems, all of which got fixed in these updates.
It is very intuitive and if you have the slightest PC savy, anyone can do it.
