Question about Compaq Presario M2000 Notebook
Hello! I just wanted to ask if anyone knows of any problems with the above laptop. I have had this laptop for 2 years and one day whilst working on it, its suddenly switched itself off, never to turn on again.
The fan was not blocked so to say that it overheated, isnt really a possibility. There have never been any significant problems whilst in use. I thought maybe that it was a power problem but have since tested other power packs and still nothing happens. I dont want to fork out hundreds to get the problem fixed as i have now bought another laptop. I just want it working again so that i can sell it on.
Any ideas? Thanks Rebecca
The connector that the power cord plugs into the rear of the laptop may have a loose or bad wire . (This would be internal and you couldn't fix it.)
Since you lost power, you can't check to see if it works under battery since you can't charge the battery with out the power!
Try putting pressure or wriggling the input rear power connector while plugged in. You will have to hold it to one position, try switching it on, etc.. Sometimes it will briefly start up as long as you hold it in that position. It is not really a "self fix " type of problem and will usually take a Technician to repair if it is the power.

If there are no lights at all, then the problem is with the power management system on the motherboard. This will require motherboard replacement in order to fix it. If there are lights, it could still be the power management system, but it could also be a bad battery or failed memory chip. If you have lights, then remove the battery and try starting with the power supply only. Still nothing, then remove the memory and try each chip one at a time in each slot. If it's still not working, then it will be the power management system. This is a common problem in several makes of laptops, as the machine ages. Also, keep in mind that just because the fan wasn't blocked externally, doesn't mean that there isn't a dust/dirt build up around the fan and in the heat sink that could cause the machine to overheat.
