Error code 99 has developed on my 20D camera, only this time the mirror keeps rapidly firing, and removing the battery and reinstalling it has no effect, removing and replacing the Canon lens and CF card even sets off the mirror albeit in single stroke movements, its like the camera is live all the time, is it terminal?, please anyone!, thanks, ron.

When switching on my Canon EOS 20D camera, the shutter fires rapidly non stop while flashing in the top panel ERR 99, switching off or removing battery makes it stop, but opening the card door makes the shutter click once, removing the card it clicks once, push the card back in three times, removing the lens fires the shutter three times etc, all with the power off, its like the camera is live all the time, with the battery in! all lenses batteries etc are Canon, ERR 99 has happened before but it never continuely fired the shutter, and all i did to cure the error 99 was remove the battery and put it back in with the camera ready to shoot once again! please is old faithful 'dead'? thanks, ron.

Error 99 also covers mechanical failure of the shutter andprimary/secondary mirror ***'y. I have seen the dreaded err99 when thesecondary mirror wouldn't get out of the way.

This happened at about 6000 clicks. Moving the secondary mirror with my finger fixed the problem. I am now at 8500 clicks

Err 99

Remove and re-install the battery
this may occur if you use a non-canon lens and the camera or lens does not operate properly.

You said you have done the recommendation already and it has no effect.

It would indicate that there is a fault in your camera if the lens is operateing correctly.

You can contact www.advancecamera.com/repair for a free repair estimate. I can't say for sure what the fault may be.

If the “ERR 99′ message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.
If you see the “ERR 99′ with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera should be serviced.

The solution to this problem is to do a "SENSOR CLEANING" function from within the MENU. Take the lens off, do sensor clean then just turn it off and back on with a lens.

    Hi Ron,

Below are the steps to help you resolve the problem .Escpecially the last part. Incase the same did not fix the issue .Hate to say this but the camera is dead and need to be either taken in for repairs or replace it with a new one

To isolate the cause of the issue, we suggest that you do the following:

    1. Turn off the camera.
    2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
    3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
    4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
    5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99′ message appear? If it does, then the camera should be
serviced. If it does not, then please proceed to the next set of steps:

    1. Turn off the camera.
    2. Insert the CF card.
    3. Turn on the camera.
    4. Format the CF card in the camera.
    5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99′ message appear? If so, then the CF card is the most
likely source of the issue. Try using a different card.

If the message does not appear, please complete the following steps:

    1. Turn off the camera.
    2. Clean the lens contacts by gently rubbing them with a pencil eraser
or soft cloth. Be careful that you do not let any debris fall into the
    camera body.
    3. Reattach your lens.
    4. Turn on the camera.
    5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

If the “ERR 99′ message only appears when one particular lens is
attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.

If you see the “ERR 99′ with a different Canon lens attached, then the
    camera should be serviced.

    Thanks

Error 99 when using Quantum Transceiver

Error code 99 is a non specific error code a sort of catch all. Remove the lens and clean the contacts (lens and camera), remove the battery and the memory card. Leave the camera in this state for about 10 mins, enough time to discharge any build up of charge or static. Reinsert the battery and the memory card and reattach the (cleaned) lens switch on leave for 5 seconds and press the shutter button to see if this has cleared to problem.

What is error 99 in canon eos 20d

It's a frustrating catch all error and needs service. The camera may have any one of numerous issues or lens issues. If you have more than one lens, see if the error occurs with both lenses on. If not then it's a lens error. A camera repair facility can plug unit the camera and download a more accurate troubleshooting code. Royal Camera Service in Hanover Park, IL is good source for this problem. The replaced the shutter on my 20D when I got the error 99 code.

I got error 099, before I was getting error 05. and the flash dos not open canon EOS 20D

I also get the error 99 message and cannot take any photos... I have been able to solve this problem by taking out the batterys and wiping down the connectors on both the batterys and the connecters in the motordrive with a lens cloth. keep the lens cloth on hand when shooting. It may be that either oils, or dirt has gotten onto the connectors. I hope this helps.

Canon EOS 20D shutter error

Hello - I figured it out. I had the exact same problem. The shutter failed and it had to be fixed by Canon. Apparently that happens after the shutter fires so many times (like a click-count on a printer). I just got my camera back and it's doing awesome now.

Cannon Eos 400D Err 99?

Error 99 is a NONSPECIFIC error message. It is almost always associated with the LENS. I first got this error on my EOS 20D whei I tried to use an older Sigma zoom lens (7 years older than the camera). I don't use off-brand lenses with my Canons. Try removing the main battery first followed by the time & date battery which is hidden in the battery compartment beside the main battery. This will reset your camera. Good Luck!

Err 99

this is what the canon people say to do for error 99

Read this!!!

The guy at tech support listened and then told me that the lens contacts were dirty and to get a pencil with an eraser on the end, just a regular old pencil with a red rubber eraser. Detach the lens from the camera, hold it so that the lens’ gold contacts are pointing down and lightly erase their exposed surface, cleaning them of any hand oil that might have gotten on them.

Do the same thing with the gold contacts inside the camera body. This is a bit harder but it’s doable: just hold camera so lens opening points down so no gunk falls in. Erase lightly. I used a lens cloth and dabbed at the contacts rather than blow them so as not to blow the erasings inside the camera.

I did this to each of my three lenses just to be sure. Lo and behold, it worked eaaa19b.jpgb9433a1.jpggood luck!! have a nice day :) :) :)

Error in body

Remove lens, CF card, and battery. Leave in a dry and slightly warm place for 24 hours. Clean lens contacts with a cloth or cue tip and eclipse/alcohol.
If the camera doesn't turn on after this, even without CF card and lens attached, then it needs to go to a Canon service centre. Don't tell them you got it wet, and maybe it will get repaired FOC.

Error report 99 on my Canon 20D

take out battery for a few mins and that resets the error, well it worked. or Before I reset it, take off the lens and put it back on.
i heard that some have problems with the lexar cards.
http://www.lexar.com/support/cust_advisory.html
in short, format the card every so offten in the camera and see if that fixes it.
also
try a firmware upgrade if your 20D has highest version get this at canon website
