Question about Canon SmartBase MP730 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Error message "wrong cartridge"

My Canon MP730 ran out of ink. I replaced it with a canon cartridge and it came back with an error message "wrong cartridge". I have shut the machine off, unplugged it, and took out all cartridges and put them all back in. I then changed the black cartridge thinking there was a problem with that particular cartridge and I still have the message "wrong cartridge". I run a small business from home and rely heavily on this machine... HELP!

Writer/producer with MP730. Changed black ink cartridge last night and got a "wrong cartridge" message. I have shut down and unplugged machine, replaced all cartidges and stll get the same message.

Nothing in manual covers this message. If the machine can give this alert, it should be covered in manual. Also ink cartridges are called "ink tanks", a strange variation. I need to get this printer back in service...NOW.

    Please help. Anyone?

Clean the print head/cartridge with Isopropol Alcohol (rubbing alcohol)and Q-Tips, The nozzles, the contacts and all the excess ink that had acummulated around the nozzles. The error message should clear.Run through all the maintenance checks and alignments. If this does not fix it, the print head needs to be replaced about $45-$60 from Canon.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response. Thanks, Joe

Many times , if we use refilled ink cartridge , then also we might get such error messages on the printer display .
Ensure that you are using genuine Canon ink cartridges.. but if the error is after changing to a new set of genuine ink cartridges..
try by cleaning the electrical contacts of both ink cartridge and the printer.. and also do a semi full reset..

Re cannon mp730 all in one -I keep getting ?wrong cartridge? error msg. when I followed the solutions that had been posted a month or two ago, removing the cartridge holder, etc. I found that the ink was...

Your print head may be damaged. You might consider replacing it.

Canon suggests pulling the ink wells and also pulling the print head and then reinstalling the whole assembly. They consider this a reset. It is also suggested to replace the printhead which the ink cartridges are housed in. I have done this to remedy bad printing and am considering this $50 purchase as I am dealing with "wrong cartridge" message also. Some have said replacing the printhead remedied this code problem. BUT, i did read one person who said this did NOT work. Right now I am debating whether I should put $50 dollars more into this machine....although this printer has been excellent and many agree.
Comments: Apr 17, 2010 - As a follow up I did fix my "Wrong Cartridge" message by replacing the printhead, I worked and worked at cleaning the old one but finally gave in and anted up the $50. This fixed it! Long live DIYers!

I have a Canon MulitPass MP730. Wrong Cartridge message.

It's worth repairing, That error on a Canon is saying that the printhead is bad, not your cartridges. The part number for your printhead is stamped on the side of the printhead could be QY6-0049-000 but I'm not sure.

Alarm on screen says wrong cartridge, so I replaced the after market ones with canon and still wont work

On Canon machines that error means you need a new printhead, the cartridge is the printhead and not the inks. I believe that printhead is QY6-0049-000 but the part number is stamped on the side of the printhead.

Display Says Wrong Cartridge

I went to the Canon website http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=SupportDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=238&modelid=9035 and typed "Wrong Cartridge" in the search portion for the MP730. It listed detailed instructions to remove all ink cartridges, raise the lever to the right on the carrier, and then remove / reseat the "carrier". After that I replaced all cartridges and printed the alignment page. All is working, now.
