Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook

No Audio Output Device is Installed

My sound icon has an x on it, when I highlight the icon with mouse it states No Audio Output Device is installed. I went to Device Manager it doesn't even show no sound device. I have installed drivers but it won't work because it needs a sound card, I believe it is realtek sound card not sure.

I also have the Acer 5100 Notebook, when I received the laptop the only CD they gave me was for Windows Vista Home Premium that is installed on my PC. Instructions stated to do a Back-up of all the programs and files on the PC before using it. I did that, so I have the back-up. If I run my back-up will it erase all my info on my pc? Will it restore my sound card?

I believe this all started when Windows Update did a update this month the end of July, everything updated except one update, and that was the New Vista Service Pkg 1. So, I didn't think anything of it, so it required me to restart my computer, and then when the pc was up and running again I didn't have a sound device, I didn't notice it right away until I tried to open windows email, it wouldn't open. I tried playing songs on my media player no sound. So, I tried to do another Window Update, hoping it would restore my sound card. But it stated I had all the updates except one which was New Vista Service Pkg 1.

Everytime I would try to update to that version it would stop in the middle of the update, and ask for the CD for Microsoft Word 2002, I couldn't find the CD, and the update failed. Window update wouldn't install the new version of vista. At first the Window Vista would not update to my pc until I removed XP version of Word 2002 from the Acer Laptop.

So, I decided to uninstall Word 2002, rebooted, then updated to the New Windows Vista Service Pkg 1. no problem updated ok. So, I restarted my pc thinking it would restore my sound card. No sound card. Tried to do another windows update. Stated No Updates are Available at this time.

I have been going to other forums alot more people are having the same problem. I went to Acer, and Realtek, no downloads for Sound Card, just driver, downloaded that, but still I don't have a sound card. I went to some sites, and they want you to pay them for downloading drivers, and sound cards. I'm not going to do that, so I guess I will contact Acer Support, and Realtek Support, and Defintely Microsoft Support.

This is ridiculous. Especially since there are many people having the same problem. It has to be a bug in the new microsoft windows vista service pkg. 1 update.

There are no drivers to delete. Still states no audio output device is not installed.
I have rebooted, shutdown. Started in up in safe mode, no help there. Like I said all this started when I started windows update. Windows updated everything except Windows Vista Service pkg 1. I had to delete the Microsoft word - XP version. Then restarted, no Audio. So I downloaded the NEW Update Vista Pkg, thinking it would install the drivers, and my sound card. Even rebooted 3-4 times, before seeking out for help. No Luck So far, the new window vista must have a bug in it. But if you go to Microsoft you have to pay them just to get help. I e-mailed Acer last night, haven't heard from them yet. I have an Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook. Please help do you do where I can download the drivers, and download sound card. I don't believe there is anything wrong with my sound card before all this happened I shouldn't have to buy a new sound card. I think it has to do with Microsoft Vista Service pkg 1. Other People if I were you don't download the Microsoft Vista Service Pkg 1...I thing there is a bug in the new version.

If you know anything else I could possibly try, please help.

    CHATTER:
I didn't encounter a problem with a sound card for vista but I think your problem was your driver because my cousin is using windows vista and it works fine. Try to reinstall a new windows that is xp and
make sure you have a driver for your sound card. Sometimes the new version of the OS will conflict the old version of the driver.

    LAST EXPERT'S SUGGESTION:

    1. Press the Fn key + the up arrow key. This will turn the volume level up.
    2. Press the Fn key + the down arrow key to adjust volume levels down.

Checking volume control for muted input/output devices
    1. Go to Accessories
    2. Click Entertainment, Volume Control
    3. Ensure that all volume control levels are raised and any mute boxes unchecked, with the exception of the microphone.

    Checking Sound Effects Manager
    1. Go to Control Panel
    2. Double left click on the "Sound Effect Manager" icon, this will open up the AC97 Audio Configuration" window.
    3. Under Environment, make sure None is selected. Sometimes if other environments are chosen (such as Stone Room) you will hear echoes or other sound effects.

    Reinstalling the sound device
    1. Go to Control Panel.
    2. Click on System
    3. Select Device manager
    4. Click on the "+" next to ?Sound, video and game controllers'.
    5. Right-click on the audio device then click uninstall.
    6. Click ?Ok' to exit out of all open windows.
    7. Restart computer.
    1. There is no audio to adjust volume control - NO GOOD!
    2. I can't even open the VOLUME MIXER to do anything. I don't have a sound card or driver for Sound, video and game controllers - DISAPPEARED!
    3. I clicked on Accessories..expanded No Folder Named Entertainment, nothing else that compared to what you were talking about. - NO GOOD!
    4. In control panel there was no icon called Sound Effect Manager, Clicked on Sound icon - No Audio Devices Installed. - NO GOOD!
Then I thought I would check another icon Speech Recognition, then clicked on Start Speech Recognition - just looking to see if I can find out more info ..received error msg: Make sure your audio hardware
is working properly and check your audio configuration in the Audio Devices and Sound Themes control panel. - NO GOOD!
    5. I have been in device manager alot, the Sound device should be under .. + SD Host Adapters then click on it.. + SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller - clicked on that phrase line and the box
stated This device is working properly. Before the updates it used to show another phrase line .. Sound, video and game controllers, but that phrase line does not show up ... Sound, video and game
controllers... doesn't show up in the device manager at all. - NO GOOD!

    LAST CHATTER: CMV9 please reply

You Posted this info a while ago. To go to this link: http://www.findmysoft.com/drivers/Acer-A...
You said it is for the sound card driver for the acer aspire 1500, but I have Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook with Vista Home Premium installed on Acer Notebook. That link states that the Download is for OS Win 2K/XP . So, would this work on a Vista System? I have an Acer 5100, not 1500. So, is the download I need for my Acer Aspire Notebook, or should I look else where. Let, me know what to do.
    Thank you.

  • troche62 Aug 11, 2008

I just need a download for an audio driver and sound FREE DOWNLOAD!

I have an ACER ASPIRE 5100 Notebook - Windows Vista Home Premium.

  • troche62 Aug 11, 2008

I bought the acer aspire 5100 notebook last June 2007 it came with Vista Home Premium on it.

I recorded a back-up of the system before using it, it stated to do that since it only came with Vista Home Premium CD Only. There were a few applications loaded on the Acer, that's why I did the back-up.

So, can't I just use the backup or will that erase everything?

I don't even know the name of the Audio device or driver that was on the notebook.

ERROR MSG: No Audio Output Device is Installed

Also Windows had an update for Vista Home Premium it was Vista Service Pkg 1. I'm wondering if that made my Audio disappear.

    Please Help!

  • troche62 Aug 11, 2008

I looked for "Realtek HD Audio", "AC97 Audio" But, it is not located in the bios. NOW WHAT?

Can't I just use my 1st Backup I had recorded when my Acer was NEW?

I would just have to back-up my documents and files and pics on a cd that is on the Acer notebook now - before downloading the 1st Backup I recorded.

Then how do I delete everything off of the notebook, so I can download the 1st Backup to restore my notebook?

  • troche62 Aug 13, 2008

I tried to download the acers audio there are 3 for this notebook. But when I save it, and download it, and then when I open it, windows internet pops up windows many times, I have go to task manager to end it, but then they keep popping up one right after the other, so I have to shut down the notebook. So I decided to delete them, since they won't work correctly. I give up. I think I'm just going to download my files to a scan disks, and reload all my applications, and definitely I will not update to windows vista service pkg 1 They have to have a bug in the version, I have been searching the internet, and a lot of people are having all kinds of problems. When person said you have to update all your drivers on your computer before you download the new version of vista. I'm gonna give you experts one more time, to help me out. Read everything I wrote, before sending info. If it doesn't work, I will download the factory settings, and download all the applications I am using. I advise people do not download the new service pkg, until the get the bugs out.
Thank you everyone for your help.

  • troche62 Aug 13, 2008

It won't let me do a restore point except for today, I have tried that many times, I am just going to reformat my notebook, and reinstall all my applications. I have been working on this problem for weeks, and I am sick of it.
Thank ya'll very much. I will no longer need your expertise no more at this time.

  • troche62 Aug 15, 2008

Instead of reformating my pc ...
I downloaded my files onto a scandisk, then I removed some of the applications, really didn't need to, but then my brother found a site to uninstall windows vista service pkg 1, so I did that, and downloaded my files, and applications back to my pc.

I thought my problem had to do with windows vista pkg service 1, so I uninstalled that service pkg, I believe that when windows updated my vista to vista service pkg 1, that's what made my audio disappear, and who knows what else.

Because, after the download from the pkg my pc restarted, and that's when my audio went missing. No Audio Output Device is Intalled.

The site to go to to uninstall ishttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/948537

Just go to the control panel click on view updates, and follow step 1 on that site, and find the service pk update (KB936330), and click uninstall.

Then I ran a complete Norton Antivirus Scan. Norton didn't find any viruses or malware spyware, so I don't know what to do.

But one of your experts told me to go to the acer site, and download the audio drivers, well they said to download one that is for my notebook, there were only 3.

So guess what, I ran the download but, before I can even see anything to install.. internet explorer browser, keeps opening up one right after the other, I mean lots of times, it keeps opening up the browser, so I have to shutdown my computer, I can't keep up with the task manager to end the internet browser, it just keeps poping up, and up. I can download other things on the internet, but something must be wrong with the audio downloads, because I tried several from acer site, and they all do the same thing.

I have Norton 360 2008, I even turned it off, and windows pop-up when I ran the acer audio driver download, and it still does the same thing (opening up windows and windows).

    Now what?

    Please Help!

I miss playing music, and games, and most of all I have an online class that uses video, and audio. I can watch a video clip, can view pics, no audio, and I can't play games.

  • troche62 Aug 15, 2008

I don't have a headset. Is there something else to try.

  • troche62 Aug 15, 2008

There is no device, I right clicked on the icon, all it shows is Sound, Playback, and Recordings. Playback, and Recordings show No Audio Devices Installed. Sound show type of sounds windows make when you Start Windows, notebook, Windows logon, Close Progam, etc... Just to set sounds for windows. Sound Scheme is set to default. So, there is nothing to enable or disable.

I have a wireless notebook, connects to my desktop pc, the desktop pc work great, no problems there.

I was wondering if I should delete all of windows updates.

I see about 4 Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista KB93218, and another Update KB935652, and another KB941229, and another KB947172 these 4 updates were not just updated, they were installed earlier this year.

  • troche62 Aug 15, 2008

To the expert before this comment I haven't tried your advise yet.

I went to the E Recovery, but it didn't ask for a password, so I went to the key on the E-mpowing Acer Bar (Acer Edata Security Management, clicked on the key and created a password, and clicked ok. Then it gave me a message stating: Your Media Device has been removed or cannot be read. Do you wish to retry, If course I tried to retry, but it gave me the same message.

So what do I do now?

  • troche62 Aug 15, 2008

I have been sending messages to acer, but they don't respond fast enough, I will wait to see what they have to say.

I will get back with you all, when I find out what to do. So I can post it for other people, or either I will be back for more comments.

I just want to thank all of you experts, it doesn't matter who sent the correct answer you all have helped, and I give you all a 10 just for helping me out, so I would know what to look for, this forum is terrific, and I will tell others about this site.

Thanks, and Have a Great Day to all the Experts!!

It seems to me that the sound card is either

  1. disabled in BIOS. Reboot, hit F1 or delete or F2 to got into setup. then look for "onboard Sound card" or On Board Audio" and enable it. OR...
  2. The sound card is either not plugged in right or dead!
I really doubt it's an update issue.

If you think it ought to work, uninstall all sound card drivers and reboot. If it detects new hardware, then it's a driver issue, if it doesn't, then the card isn't working and no amount of driver install or updating will help.

Everyone is pointing to your sound drivers when what is actually missing is as stated by Windows the Output device. Under the sound, video and game controllers heading in device manager there are always other audio devices besides your audio chip such as media control devices, audio codes, and legacy audio drivers, as well as some hidden ones. Windows will pass it's audio requests to one of these who in turn pass it along to your sound chip's audio driver. If one of these is missing then the chain is broken.

With enough knowledge and time one can possibly reinstall the missing components and get it going again but it's usually quite a painful process of trial and error.

In my honest opinion you are better of to backup your data, all the Acer's I've seen come with the harddrive split in two from the factory, a C: drive and a D: drive. Move all your data to the D: drive or use DVDs to back it up. Then use the Vista restore DVD that came with your machine to reload a fresh copy of Windows onto the system. This will put everything back in place as if you had just taken it out of the box. Once done all the audio components will be in place and you should be able to hear again.

If by small chance you sound chip is faulty on the motherboard then the same problem might come back, in that case if your machine is under warranty then request service at fixmyacer.com

Dear,
it means that the sound card is disable from the cmos setup option..
u have to enable it first from there.......
restart ur system and then use the key for setup either it is Del or any dedicated F key that it shows for entering setup..
check the built-in devices and enable that..
then u will be able to see soundcard option..
then install the driver for it..
if u dont have, then download it from here...even u can much more about ur book from here including drivers...

Using a restore disk, using the option to "recover" instead of "reinstall". this will not format your drive, or erase any personal files. however your programs may need reinstalled your program files should be thier. also i would suggest to preform a backup of your system and personal files and settings. (i can help with this if needed). all the systems and drivers will be returned to the original state of operation.

Go to the device manager and click on view menu "show hidden devices" does any new devices appear?.
I agree with comments above you should restore to that point your sound disappeard. if its a vista bug its up to microsoft to fix it. seems like the update inactivated your sound card.

Select your notebook for the downloads there is 3 sound drivers for your notebook you can try all of them and see if any change.

the only other thing that I could think of is either theres a setting in the bios to turn it on

or your sound on the board is gone.

but try the drivers. and also try installing a microphone on the laptop to see if it will register any sound input. not output.

The best thing you can do is a system restore back to a time and date before you installed SP1. From then on I would keep scouring the Acer forums and FAQ's to see if this is a common fault and if Acer or Microsoft release a workaround.
As long as your antivirus and malware scanners are upto date and you use your machine behind a routers firewall you should be safe until a workaround is released.

I will check on another forum I frequent to see if anyone I know with an Acer is having the same problem.

As crazy as this sounds try uninstalling the modem drivers. In the past in the days of dialup some software modems used the sound card to give you the dial tone and key beeps, because of this the drivers were linked. I have lost count of the amount of times I have been building a machine for someone and while installing all the new drivers I would get to the modem, install the drivers and suddenly Windows would discover a multimedia device that turned out to be the sound card.

Worth a shot, you look like you have tried everything else.

I did promise in an earlier post to ask around for you and I am sorry to say none of my friends had anymore ideas than you have already tried.

When the system is booting up, look for the key to press to enter the BIOS (aka "Setup") , F2 or Esc. Press the appropriate key BEFORE it starts loading Windows.
look for "Realtek HD Audio", "AC97 Audio" and make sure it says Enabled, not Disabled.
Reboot the PC, install drivers (if the sound isn't working) and you're on

Sir, i didnt encounter a problem with a sound card for vista but i think your problem was your driver because my cousin is using windows vista and it works fine. try to reinstall a new windows that is xp and make sure you have a driver for your sound card. sometimes the new version of the OS will conflict the old version of the driver. hope that helps sir!

Coolguy has the right approach to this, but I think he meant uninstall drivers in the drivers tab. I recommend rebooting after uninstalling the drivers. The machine will find the sound card and reinstall the drivers automatically.

Run a system restore, or a system repair with your recovery or operating system disc. The restore or repiar will not effect any data, so there's no need for back up.

  • Ryan Rogers

I'm going to suggest doing a system repair with the operating system disc that you have. You will not lose any data in doing a repair.

  • Ryan Rogers

Have you tried the system restore from the system tools yet? If not, try the restore, you may have to go back a couple of restore points, but it should bring the sound back.

    Dear Sir,

Download, install, and run Everest Home Edition on this machine. (Clean FreeWare) Once it's finished loading and running, look under Multimedia, or, under Multimedia, PCI / PnP Audio. This will tell you what sound devices you have available on your system.

    thanks
    good luck

You can try uninstalling the service pack one to see if it is the cause.

Drivers are all you need, you can't download a sound card, the card is internal hardware. im 100% sure its a software problem bug as you said.

Here is the page, click and when you get page select Audio_realtek.. from dropdown menu in windows vista section.
Download drivers, you will need to unzip drivers and run installation program afterward.

You do not need to delete anything,
First open audio properties, from small icon near to clock in lower right hand corner, or from control panel, and check if audio is muted.
If audio is not muted, just download and install new drivers from one of the downloads posted. This is the way it works.
Sometimes having many experts posting can be confused, but this is the general procedure, and , unless audio adapter is faulty, it usually work.

    Regards
