Could be 32bit or 64 bit all these will have to be put into consideration when you want to download drivers for your unit. to get the precise driver you need visit the HP customer support website from there you can identify your unit specs and download the right driver for your unit.

Check to see if the USB drive works on some other PC or laptop, if it does. Then its your laptop, see if your laptop has the chipset and USB drivers installed. If your OS is 7 32 or 64, you will need to check it out in the computer properties before visiting the link below. Note this is manufacturer of your laptop website, HP.

AMD SATA AHCI Driver for win xp on hp dv6 3043ca

this link has the driver you need for SATA on HP devices.

It also has the full instructions on loading them from a floppy disc. If you don't have a floppy drive you can burn to cd and use that and load as part of the operating system install.

I would not revert back to Windows XP if I were you as Microsoft has not supported it since April 2014. Anyway, I do not see drivers for Windows XP on the HP page that I am showing you.
