Screen dead as a dodo - and its not inverter or backlight - HELP

Hi, and thanks in advance for any assistance.
In a nutshell:
Out of warranty
Screen dead.
Video card is ok as external output to monitor works.
Have changed both the inverter, cable and backlight and still no joy.
What else could it be? How can I test inverter or backlight?

Cheers

Cheers for reply. Cant be motherboard. There is an image on the screen itself , problem is the backlight does not light up. I have tried 2 other compatible inverters, the vid cable and changed the backlight but no joy.
I know its a process of elimination but dont know how to test the voltage getting through to the inverter or to test the backlight?

Only two things left. The screen itself or the connection on the motherboard. I believe the problem is going to be with a dead screen, so, replace the screen. If this doesn't do it, then I'm afraid the motherboard connection may have failed, and I'm sure you know what that means.

On the inverter, you should be able to test it with an ohm meter. The inverter boosts the power from the board, back up to the level required by the screen, I couldn't tell you the exact voltage, only that on the screen side of the inverter the voltage will be comparable to the power of the wall outlet. The backlight can't really be tested, it either works or it doesn't when power is applied. Don't completely rule out the motherboard connection yet, I've had machines through my shop that seemingly had an inverter issue, that turned out to be that the pins in the motherboard connector that the inverter receives power through via the screen ribbon/cable, were damaged or corroded. Cleaning the corrosion from the pins fixed several, but the ones with damaged pins i had to get new motherboards for.

The inverter/backlight combination isn't the whole picture. The inverter powers the backlight, but the inverter is controlled by a signal commonly called "Brite-On", which comes from the motherboard. If the "Bright -On" signal from the motherboard is missing, then the inverter (and thus the backlight) won't work. The problem you are having is on the motherboard. here's a link to a datasheet of such a device:

This looks like a backlight problem. Every LCD has a backlight the older ones have Fluorescent lamps and newer ones have LED.
Most probably your laptops screen is equipped with a fluorescent lamp.
You may need to replace the backlight or the inverter of the screen.
I would not recommend doing it at home because messing with a LCD screen can damage it (make it unrepairable) and you might get electrocuted.
Take your laptop to a qualified technician or if its under warranty you might get it fixed for free.
Thanks. Please feel free to contact me for further assistance.

D600 Latitude laptop - LCD showing ghost/dim images

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you seethe normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and theproblem is the backlight.

If you see a very dim image or flicking image on the LCD screen it means you have a backlight problem.

Dimimage and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faultyLCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltageto the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burntout, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.
Check out www.lcdparts.net for parts, repair service and DIY info.
Thank you Sir, Have a nice day.

Black screen on new laptpnhp g60

Hi there.
If you say this machine is new and you have no display i recommend you take advantage of the manufacturers warranty and send the laptop in for repair as it will take opening the laptop up and removing the bezel (plastic screen surround) to get to the inverter (backlight), doing this yourself will void any warranty you have.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

No Backlight when powered up Acer 5610.

Mine does this too. It is the inverter. Of course it goes wrong as soon as your warranty expires. It can result from Best Buy sending you the incorrect battery and them insisting to put it in even though the voltage doesn't match...

You need to replace the inverter. This page should help:

IBM THINKPAD SCREEN DEAD

Hi,

Since you have replaced the inverter and the unit works with an external monitor, then probably problems would be with:
  • CCF lamps (backlight);
  • inverter triggers and/or B+ supply.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Notebook inverter or backlight problem

I have the same type of Dell laptop( I am on it right now). It sounds like your graphics card is going bad. And if you are still under warranty and contact Dell, it is possible that they will come to you to fix it. If you are Not under warranty, it is still very possible to get them to come to you, but of course you will have to pay for services and parts if your computer is still not under warranty.
