Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Toshiba sattelite p100-160 big problems.

First the dvd drive failed to write or burn. Although device manger stated that dvd-ram was working discs did not regester in my computer.
I using ad- aware to check the HD, nothing was found, I restarted the laptop bit would not load windows, only showing the splash screen.
I tried a new dvd drive but no change. It looked like the HD had failed. I have tried another HD and tried to load Windows but no joy. I am at a loss what to do next. I bought this 'used' for my daughter, she has had it only 6 weeks. Hope you can help. Thanks!

Could be ram. Check it is not loose in socket (usually in compartment underneath). Take apart as much as possible and check for loose connections.

If you cant play a real dvd in it, the laser is prob out of allignment or broken, if its just dvd that you burned, try changing disc type, there is +R and -R , also if that does not work try a different program to burn discs ? good program is convert X to dvd, not free, unless your good at torrents :)

DVDs do not need any driver, the DVD is faulty and must be fixed or replaced.

assuming you have used this make of media before and tried other discs incase you have a bad batch, it could be that your drives laser itself is starting to fail when reading certain media, although it may still be able to read cd's and DVD it may fail with CDR and/or DVD-RW discs.

I have a Sony DVD DRU-820A burner. When I insert a dvd--either a blank one to burn or a DVD disc to view--the name of the drive switches from DVD-RAM Drive (D:) to CD Drive (D:). The burner no longer burns...

The device is _partially_ broken -- the part that reads/writes DVD media is "dead".

Spend $40 to purchase a new CD/DVD reader/writer, to replace the "dead" unit.

I think some cooling devices on your laptop stopped working which might have lead to Motherboard problem due to heating.

Loading some DVD's

I have seen this same thing on a laptop. DVD drives use two lasers. One for CD and one for DVD. As you noted CDs are just fine and so is that laser. Although I believe the DVD laser is intermittent. And it will work with some DVDs and not others. Yes I have seen this before. What will probably happen a few months down the road is it will stop reading all DVDs.

It isn't economical to replace the failing laser. It is far cheaper to just replace the whole DVD drive. Lasers are like light bulbs. Some seem to last forever and some seems to burn out right away. Generic DVD replacements will generally work, although the face plate might not fit.

Another option is to get an external DVD that plugs into the USB port. And those Slimline models are really small (same size as laptop CD/DVD drives) and you can use them on other computers too.
