Question about Western Digital (WD1000VE) 100 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Hard Drive Hi There, I just have a question, I'm wanting to get a 160GB Hard Drive for my ThinkPad i1200. My Personal laptop IBM ThinkPad T40 has a Western Digital 160GB EIDE Hard Drive in it with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic on it and I was wanting to get the newier Hard Drive for my i1200 in 160GB capacity. I heard that the newier Hard Drive doesn't have a disk that spins in it and I think its called ATA or SATA But I don't know. The i1200 is going to be for work and just going to put Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition on it. I get my Hard Drives from Best Buy and got my T40's 160GB for only $99. But I want to get the newier Hard Drive, So I don't have to deal with the disk ones and If I would drop my laptop. But my T40 has the Active Protection and shuts off the Hard Drive if sences being droped. But the i1200 don't have. So I just want to know if its the ATA or the SATA. Also How can I get my ThinkPad T40's FingerPrint reader to work? I never used it before ever since I got the laptop new and wanted to test it and see how well it works. Thanks, Patrick....

Hi Patrick,

ATA and SATA are basically the same. The SATA drives won't work with the machines that are designed for IDE, so you're stuck with IDE on the I-series. Check out for buying hard drives. You'll be able to get them for half the price Bestbuy sells them for.

I'm not sure what's involved in getting the fingerprint device to work, if it's just a driver or a combination of driver and software. I've never worked with or had one before. I'll look into it. Have you read any of the forums at IBM's support site on this?

The Thinkpad line of laptops, owned and produced by Lenovo, is a series of portable computers. The Thinkpad line was first introduced by IBM in 1992, but has been manufactured under the Lenovo brand since 2005.
At the time it was introduced, the Thinkpad was one of the few affordable, yet high-quality laptops on the market.
Laptops were, at that stage, vastly more expensive than desktops.
The Thinkpad line runs the Windows operating system.
Windows, while generally efficient, has the capability to suffer hard drive crashes.
Fortunately, Thinkpad laptops carry Lenovo's Rescue and Recovery program.
This program can help in crash situations.
Shut down your computer.
Start up your computer.
Watch for the Windows prompt that asks you to press your computer's ThinkVantage button.
Press the ThinkVantage button when prompted, then release it.
Rescue and Recovery will open.
Follow the wizard's instructions

I bought a new WD1600BEVS drive to go in a laptop but when I put it in and try to install Windows XP it only shows 54GB available out of the 160GB on the drive.

Tell the Windows Install to DELETE the current partition.
Then, tell it to create a new partition, and it will use the entire 160GB.

My pc does not permanently show western digital needs a hi-speed usb 2.0 me where to find the controller.

They're referring to the USB port built into the computer. Apparently your PC is older and has USB 1.1 ports? You can buy USB expansion cards, assuming it's a desktop not a laptop.
