Question about Ingersoll Rand SS5L5 Ir Electric Stationary Air Compressor 5HP. 60 Gallon Single Stage Vertical

1 Answer

Compressor runs but quit compressing air. Noticed it started sounding funny-noticeable ping or clatter noise. Oil level is fine. Not very many hours on the unit. Let it cool down and tried again-no luck. Bought in Dec. of '09-gets intermittent use.

1999 Firebird knocking then stall

Well CB....a knocking noise coming from the engine is never good news.

Typically any real ugly noise that stops an engine from running is catastrophic. With the info you provided...low oil pressure, excess oil in the pan, knocking engine sounds and a motor that will now, not turn over...sounds like a bent con rod caused by a failed main bearing.

1999 v6 pontiac exploded dia-homgkn40kjilovpbxhhmhqzq-1-0.jpg
The engine overheated so the first suspect is the cooling system, some engine designs require that the thermostat be installed with the vent or bypass hole in a certain position. Failure to position the thermostat properly can cause engine overheating.

Another cause of the dreaded knock is "Knocking and pinging" caused by a low fuel octane rating, carbon deposits on cylinder walls or incorrect spark plugs... all not good. I think you would have noticed if your motor was knocking and pinging for any extended period of time.

Excess oil in the pan gets frothed up by the crankshaft slapping it around and aerates the oil which decreases its shear strength, which is what keeps metal parts from contacting directly together.
This could ruin the main crankshaft bearings.

First thing I would do is remove all the spark plugs (to reduce engine compression) and place a socket on the crank pulley bolt and try to turn the engine over...you should be able to spin the crank....if you can't get the motor spinning..it's seized up.

Good luck !

Hi, recently after my last oil change i noticed that the engine on my 1999 ford escort has a knocking or pinging sound when i start or if idle for a few minutes it seems to stop while driving any...

First---Make sure your oil level is where it needs to be. If your car is driving fine and has no loss of power, then you probably have a defective knock sensor. It's hard to determine without more info on your vehicle, like mileage, compression, and oil pressure if your engine is "going bad"

I have a 2003 HD Heritage EFI (12k miles)... I have noticed when the engine is idling it sounds fine. When I am at highway speed (65MPH & 5th gear) I have noticed a loud intermitent clatter. at low...

Sounds like valve clatter, a common issue. We chased the same noise, with HD installing new push rods, adjustable rods and then they said it is a Harley. Not a real answer. This noise ruines the ride as it grabs your mind and focuses you on the noise. We tried different rod extensions within the lifter adjustment range, same deal. We chased for about 1 1/2 years, trying to not void warranty.

The only long term solution was to go to aftermarket (velvet touch) lifters and lifter blocks. Now we NEVER hear the issue.

When I turn on the air conditioner sometimes it makes a chattering noise and continues to make the noise and other times no noise.

Sounds like a problem related to the a/c compressor clutch, or that the freon level is too low, and it is starting to damage the internals of the compressor. If when it works with no noise, it is not cooling the cabin, then the compressor is definitely shot. i have seen in a few instances that taking apart the compressor, cleaning it, and replacing the oil, it reduces or stops the clattering.

Sounds like it isn't getting oil on the bearings. Take it apart yourself, after you get a diagram of it and find a parts source.

Craftsman air compressor, oil build up in the air line

worn compressor rings, not a real issue, I assume it is more of a build up over time, say a gram of oil is blown into the lines every year, well one gram would not be noticed nor two but since it soes not evaporate it builds up to the point that you can see it, some oil is blown by brand new compressors and over time gets to be more and more, but as long as you are still getting full pressure you do not have to service the compressor, but since this is being used on water pipes I would install a trap inline to catch the oil

Electrical noise

If the noise from the compressor sounds like a humming followed by a click, the compressor is "short cycling". Could be either the compressor relay or the compressor itself is bad. Not sure on the hissing noise. Could be just a loose panel that needs to be tightened or adjusted.
