Question about Bernina 1008

1 Answer

I bought a used Bernina 930 Record sewing machine a few months ago and I had it serviced and it works great except that the foot pedal doesn't do what the instructions say it should do. It should stop needle down upon retapping the foot pedal but this machine insists on stopping with the needle up 100% of the time I tap. Any clues what the problem is? I own a Viking sewing machine as well and that machine stops needle up and also needle down when I lightly tap on the foot pedal and so I'm thinking that the Bernina should operate just like my Viking. Am looking forward to your input. Thanks. Maria

I think there must be something wrong with the foot pedal. It just will not react when I press on the back of it and I've tried dozens of times trying to get it to move the needle to the down position. Maybe the wiring is damaged somehow??? I do sew on the machine and love it's performance but I really wish I could control the needle position like I do my Viking machine.

Hello,
Let me say that is a fine sewing machine. I have the fix for your issue. Your sewing machine has an electronic system that takes the needle to it's highest point when ever you take your foot off the pedal, the front side of the pedal. If you tap the back of your pedal with your heel the electronic system will take the needle down into your work. If you again tap the back of the pedal again with your heel the needle will go up. In short the front side of the pedal is for full speed sewing where the needle can stop in the full up position at anytime. If you want more direct control of your needle then simply use your heel on the back of the pedal.

I understand. Yes, if you cannot control the needle with the back of the pedal then something is definitely wrong with the pedal of the wiring. Pedals, like machines, have to be tended to from time to time. I would suggest going to your neighborhood sewing/vacuum shop and have the pedal looked at. Fixing those are usually not expensive as there is not a whole lot to them pedals.

Is bernina 930 a low shank or high shank machine

Bernina has feet that are specific to their machines only. They have old and new style feet depending when the machine was made. You cannot put generic low, high, slant or snap on feet on a Bernina sewing machine.

I am looking for a bernina 930 service manual. I dropped the feed dogs and they will not come back up.

Most likely they have seized due to lack of regular oiling. I have used the following method on several older seized Berninas with great success. Just be sure to NOT get any oil near the 930 basting stitch mechanism (about the middle of the needle bar) or it will most likely lock the machine.

Wheel on right side that controls the needle up and down is very tight...

This is a diagram for the Bernina 830 Record, but it will give you a good idea of what & where to look for oil ports.

My Bernina "Record" of 1972 suddenly stitches away without foot pedal command, infact same with pedal unplugged Only way to stop is cut AC power

Something with in your machine seems to be shorting out. Since it is many years old I suspect you have wires that the insuation is rotten and making a short. I have seen this before. Should get it repaired if it's worth it. You could be shocked or hurt.

I cant get my stitch Width Zig zag knob to turn om my bernina record 930. Any one have this problem?

Most likely because your machine has not been serviced (oiled & cleaned) in a long time and the old oil has turned to glue and seized. This is probably the most common problem with mechanical sewing machines. A mechanical sewing machine should be regularly maintained..ie every 40 hours of sewing use or at least every six months when not in use. You may want to take it to a Bernina service technician. Ask for a bottle of Bernina oil for CB hook machines and ask if they will show you how to oil it.

How do you fix a sewing machine foot pedal for Bernina 930?

You could open it and tinker around, but since those are very expensive controls to repair once a customer has "tinkered" with them, I would suggest bringing it to a Bernina repair shop.

What is the difference between a bernina record 930 and just a bernina 930

At the present time, Bernina 930 Record and Bernina 930 are the same machine. Although, technically the name is Bernina 930 Record, referring to the mostly mechanical sewing machine produced in the 1980's. They are very coveted machines and one of the more popular models.

However, Bernina has, in the past few years, begun producing computerized machines and labeling them with the same numbers of older mechanical machines (makes things very confusing), ie Bernina 830 Record vs Bernina 830 computerized model. At this point in time, Bernina has not yet produced a computerized 930.

I have a Bernina 830, bought in 1978. When I depress the foot pedal, nothing happens. Power is on. Do I need a new pedal?

I've just fixed this problem by replacingthe main capacitor in the foot pedal. I have a Bernina 830. I needed a soldering iron, and I had to buy the right capacitor, but it fixed this exact problem. Btw, a few months ago this problem initially appeared (on my machine) as an issue where the speed was either zero, or full speed). After a white it wouldn't work at all.
