Question about Kingston (DTIU3/2GB) 2 GB USB Hard Drive

Kingston USB Device not recognized

I have a Kingston Data Traveler 2GB USB Flash Drive which I bought 2weeks ago. Whenever I plug it in one of my usb ports, i get a message which says "USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB Devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it." I tried plugging in the device in other computers but still i get the same message. The OS of the computers I've tried are all Windows XP. The device worked fine for the past week until recently. Is it the device that has the problem or what..?Thanks..

I have the same problem, and I have tried it in about 20 different computers. It only works in half of them, and I get the "not recognized" error in the other half. The error always shows up on the same computers, and always works on the same computers, it is not random. All PC's run XP SP2.

    With my 8gb Kingston DataTraveler

  • buckinghamjc Oct 05, 2008

I cannot view my kingston data traveler 2GB in my computer.
Windows Vista recognizes the drive, says that it has installed the driver?
But then i can't find the drive in the my computer.

I have also had problems adding other flash drives to my laptop.
However, I can connect my digital camera's sd card throught the usb?

Also I know that the flash drive works as it works on xp.
    thanks
    JC

This drive I have (kingston data traveller 2 gb usb) has always worked like a charm until today. It still works in my laptop, which runs windows xp but when I plugged it into my vista computer it said it installed then did the autoplay. It started to display all the files and then froze up and I could go no further. I need to be able to access these files from my Vista computer because it is my main computer and the data traveller has all my work files on it (which are not currently on my vista computer because I just got the computer back yesterday from the Gateway repair shop).

I did try taking everything off and reformatting it but it does not get picked up after that. Even the status light on it doesn't even light up and no notifications of it show up. I tried it in a different usb port but there was no reaction there either, so I don't think it is the usb port messed up.

I tried searching for driver help for it and the kingston website only has one for windows 98SE, not Vista.

Not sure if this is of any help.... but I had this exact issue and have just fixed it! (I have a 16gb Kingston USB stick). I had just built a system for someone and was testing the USB ports on the front of their tower and when I got home and plugged in my drive windows decided it was dead/broken! (it either gave a malfunction error or said the USB item was not recognised!) I was not happy!!! ... I then found myself here, not finding a real solution. And then. I plugged and unplugged the drive a few times until it did show up on the 'my computer' screen; windows still gave the message, inaccessible/malfunction etc... I tried to format but windows hung until I unplugged the drive. I had to plug/unplug it again a bunch of times to get my system to see it, and then! I right clicked and used the 'eject' option (thinking maybe it was stuck somehow from when I was testing the USB ports on the new build I had done). Lo and behold it ejected and when I plugged it back in all my data was there! (I'm guessing my guess was maybe in the right ball park, that where I was testing the USB ports I maybe glitched the USB drive boot up/discovery process, and by ejecting it reset it). All in all a simple thing. Any my pen works now!

follow up on this... the pen soon died completely and I returned it under warranty for an exchange. The new pen still has issues with some USB ports. One though is that the open ended design rises the chance of having a dirty/bad contact on the plug which would cause issues connecting and possible malfunction.

I think you have to buy a another data traveler

If you can get this problems in all computer that means it doesn't work and also it can't fix it.

you will need to update/reinstall drivers

right click to reinstall drivers

if you can see your usb drive but its not working

ports (com&lpt) right click update driver if this fails to fix the problem

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red white green black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems for a computer and its parts

SOURCE: I have a Kingston Data Traveler 2GB USB Flash

Hi there, some time its happens because of the drivers. I give you a suggestion that, change the USB connector & use other one. If the same thing happened then install the USB driver again from the drivers disk. Then restart your computer and try to use that device. If again you face problem, then visit the shop & ask the person for check the Device. I guess your device have a problem. Because you also mentioned that, your already try these in other computer & face the same problem. You have one year warranty so you can get a new one from the shop.
Thanks & waiting for your feedback.

The thumb drive might have some fault.
Plug it in other OS mainly windows XP and Linux.
If still same problem persists after tried in Linux, problem is with pen drive.
You can ask for a replacement from the dealer as it has guarantee for 5years.

Files on a flash drive can be corrupted if it is not removed from the USB port properly.
Before removing the flash drive click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon and then click on the flash drive you want to remove and then remove the flash drive when the computer message says it is Safe to remove.
To restore the flash drive you need to format the flash drive, but you will lose the data stored on the flash drive.

Kingston 2 GB data traveler

I doubt the one u have is a chinese made one (the original comes in a packet sealed whereas the chinese one comes in an openable packet with flap).I have found that most of the kingston pendrives in India are chinese made one of very low price. If u r using the original one, then might be ur pendrive is plugged in the usb drive with USB1.0 (low speed USB). install the latest usb2.0 driver n then try to open again.
